sticking a plain sticker over the NFRU just covers it, sticking a BS mark sticker over it implies that the can meets British Standard mark requirements...

Now you can cover it up (not with a E/BS stamp!!!) or polish it out, but to be honest its a waste of time as legally if the can isn't stamped at all then it is NFRU. My M4 system is not stamped and this is a problem I experience everytime I get pulled. The best thing to do is just leave the can as is, don't stick on a fake E/BS stamp as you can end up in more trouble!!! |

By that logic if you take the baffle out of a legal can you're commiting some grave offence.
My can is way too lud, but has provision for a baffle, it is E marked, and if they did take it "all the way" then they have no grounds to state what sort of baffle should be used with that can. Could be a cork for all they can prove.

Either way the likelihood of a copper taking it any further are remote, they are more than happy to whack you with the fine and fill in a short form than try to prosecute and spend days on initial paperwork (this comes from my cousin, a Sgt in the traffic division). |

Well they'd have to sieze the bike to do anything, otherwise just accidentally re-fit the standard can or the baffle.

Also, if you have a can that's not road legal on then your insurance is invalid so if you're in a crash then not only will the insurance potentially not pay out, the police will probably do you for riding without insurance.
Fitting a non-road legal can is a construction and use offence, which carries a fine and penalty points whereas if you're stupid enough to file off the "not for road use" markings or, even worse, put a sticker over the top to make them look like road legal cans, then that's a dishonesty offence. edit: you have to remember that the noisier your bike, the more likely you are to attract police attention. If you go through any quiet village or suburb with a race can on then it's highly likely that someone will phone the neighbourhood policing team because the noise will **** everyone off. One of the reasons why so many people don't like bikers is because of how noisy bikes are compared to cars; given that road legal exhausts can be enormously loud and sound great while still being legal, why hack people off and run the risk of attracting police attention by fitting an even louder illegal can? There's some basic information about exhausts and the law over here, which is from a solicitors who specialise in bikes. Last edited by ranathari; 12-01-08 at 06:11 PM. |
