I didn't grip any of the important bits only the rivet.

To get it out I used a flat head screwdriver and twisted it to pry it out being careful not to scratch or bend any bits, then pulled it out by hand.

Again, I reckon this is down to the person that pulls you. If you're riding safely, within the limits and are being pulled solely for a 'check' or for the noise (i.e. not bad riding), my excuse will be that "I was knocked off by a lad who neither looked nor indicated, therefore making it impossible for me to avoid the previous accident I suffered, whereas with the baffle out, someone like that is more likely to hear me. However I do have the baffle under my seat and will fit it right now to comply."

OK it might not get me off, but at least having a reasoned discussion about why you took it out in the 1st place might just give you the benefit of the doubt. Most coppers are actually quite reasonable you know, as long as you're not extracting the urine.

Have you tried that? £5 it doesn't work. When I got pulled he'd started writing the ticket before I started talking. Bike coppers are slightly different though, more likely to turn a blind eye.

No mate, I haven't. Willing to stick a fiver on it though, 'cos I'd much rather shell out £35 (£30 fine + £5 bet) than leave the baffle in and get knocked off again because someone didn't know I was there.

Totally agree. Was just saying that's the maximum possible fine if they decided to book you
