I have a Datatool alarm and am actually quite happy with it. It gives me peace of mind when I have to leave the bike somewhere (like outside my Mum's place) or my friends flat. Mind you I back it up with a damn good lock that cost a small fortune and a disk lock that was not cheap either.

The only down side so far has been the battery drain when I first had it, before I worked out how to make it work in Winter mode. Yeah, I was that daft...

Am I alone in actually thinking that an alarm is a good idea?

No; many people think they are a good idea, but those that don't tend to be quite vocal about it

I'm with you, I know it won't stop the bike being stolen alone but with a chain and disk lock it all helps as a deterrent - you hear stories about immobilisers but mine is just a basic "bump it and it'll make a shed load of noise" type of alarm with the advantage of it being two way so the fob buzzes and beeps too.

Can you not fit yours in the section between the riders' seat and the tail section?

I agree, if it has a tilt/movement sensor then it should be mounted securely to the bike.

As YC said, most are fixed to the subframe, I suppose it's really down to available space.....especially if you're going to refit your Scottoiler.

As to whether or not to have an alarm, I personally have had no trouble with the ones I've had fitted to my bikes past and present.
The benefits to having one should outway the negatives.....

• cheaper insurance
• peace of mind
• theft deterant

With regard to nasty ******* bike thieves, well, anything to make their lives even a little bit harder is definitely worth it IMO.

Obviously someone who has never worked in the bike trade and had to put up with numerous customers with faulty alarms. Sell 1 Datatool, get 5 back for repair. Fit them as well as you like, the main unit will inevitably go wrong.

You want to know how reliable alarms are, ask an AA or RAC patrolman. You'll never find one with any alarm fitted to their own bike.

All I can say is that while your experience of Datatool has been 500% negative, my experience of Meta has been 100% positive.
