Any diesel engine can run on Veg oil. It just might not run on pure veg oil. If its only got one glow plug it might be a bugger to start on cold mornings on pure oil.
And modern common rail or otherwise diesel will run (better than usual) on a 50/50 mix of Veg oil and diesel. If you have a Bosche fuel pump, no adjustments required. If you have a Lucas pump, the grub screw in the centre of the pump needs to be turned in by 1/4 turn to increase flow. And if you shell out a preheater (£25 quid), you can run higher ratios of Oil. The preheater just heats the oil making it less viscous meaning it injects better. Veg oil isn't "bio diesel" which does affect O rings over the long term due to alcohol being present in it. Veg oil does no damage at all. You do need to change the fuel filter every 3-4000 miles. (£4.50!) I've now been running my van on Veg oil for 18 months (most of that time at 90%+ veg oil. Its happiest at about 75% oil/ 25% diesel. and sees higher economy, more power, smoother running, better throttle response and a higher cruising speed. Its currently under £18 for 20 litres at Costco but limited to 200 litres per customer per trip. I just pick up 6 tubs each time I go. Two go straight in the tank and 4 sit in the back for topping up as required. in 18 months, I've *saved* enough on fuel to mean my van was effectively free ![]() C |

my C1 is going in for it's LPG conversion, and it's gonna take 1690 litres to pay back which will work out at 15,000 miles providing the government don't stick anymore tax on fuel come budget time.
And if i was to run a diesel on 50/50 it would be a good idea too. |

One thing I found when I had a sprint demo bike was that the gauge lies (a lot) - it varied from saying 270ml to go when full to 40 with a single bar remaining. I think it uses the consumption figures and current level to guess, so RPM matters a bit.

It was ticking over tbh, plus it had done 175 miles from last fill up so was getting close by that method also.

I know I'm being overly generous here, but I can't stop helping a mate in his hour of need. I'll give you my Beemer and a tenner in exchange for yours cos I'm a kindly soul - I'll even leave the new tyres on.

Stick a gerry can in your top box, ride 'til it runs dry, stick the 5 litres in, and at the next petrol station see if brimming it will let you get another 15 litres in.
