I think this thread proves there's more disbelievers than otherwise. Put quite simply, they daren't try and express or try to encourage others to follow their beliefs because they'd be shot down in flames.

Not one single shred of evidence exists anywhere to prove the existence of a supreme deity/god/whatever, yet millions of supposedly intelligent people choose to believe in one because they were conditioned by their parents to do so. These are people - many of them are scientists who have very open minds and experiment throughout their entire working lives to find the truth or a solution to a problem - who blindly go through their whole lives believing in a fairy tale; I think that's rather sad. Most kids stop believing in the tooth fairy and Santa by the time they're 9 or 10 at latest, but 'god' seems to stick in their minds.

Maybe the Vatican should spend some of their billions trying to prove the existence of their god, rather than squandering it on lavish palaces and clothing for their leaders, or providing damage limitation and a pension for the hundreds of priests who are proven to rape or molest kids every year - I'd possibly start to accept there's something worth believing in if they did. If they spent a fraction of it on feeding the dying kids in Africa then again, I might possibly accept that religion is worth a toss. As it is I can't see one single reason why anyone should believe.

i have a 1 word question about the bible..... dinosaur... christians believe that the world is 3000 years old on the theory that they took all the ages of every generation in the bible and added them together to get this number, now you would think that if dinosaurs existed which there IS evidence of and that they existed in this time that they would have been mentioned in the bible at some point "oh and jesus and the deciples walked to nasserath but their trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus.... with a splinter in his paw, and oh the desiples did run a shriek and what a big ****ing lizard lord. but jesus was unafraid, he took the splinter from the brontosaurus paw and the big lizard became his friend and he sent him to scotland to live in a loch for oh so many years where he lived happily ever after. the end haha

remember
Be excellent to each other.
Just saying
You don't need to believe in any god etc to do that .
Just makes life better for all.
And it's common to the religious basic beliefs too.
One size fits all.

I'll let this pass because I know that you're not aware that I lived with a woman for 8 years who was a parochial church councillor, was actively involved in her church and took our three kids to that church every Sunday, from where I'd collect them afterwards - she's still one of my best friends. The church people were lovely and soon realised that trying to get me within the doors was a waste of time. I never attacked their beliefs, I accepted they have theirs and I have mine and any views I've expressed within this thread have been done face to face with them. It's when religion spills over into things that should not bother them that I start to get annoyed.

Courts should not have an oath sworn on a bible or any other religious book, because as far as I'm concerned no religious book is worthy. Oaths should be sworn purely on threat of imprisonment if it is proven the person taking it has lied, religion is not required and clouds judgement.

Single faith schools should be abolished, they encourage segregation and actively discourage integration.

Religion and politics do not go together, when a politician announces he or she attends church I start looking for the one who doesn't. I don't need a sky-fairy believer making policy decisions on my behalf, I need someone with a quest for truth not fiction.

When I did my jury service, I was given the option to either swear on the bible or to not. I choose not to as I am in no way religious and instead read out a simple statement along the lines of what you said above.

I dont know if its a new thing or not, but I was surprised I was given a choice and also glad that I was to.

No think its been like that for ages, certainly when I've given evidence, there's always been that option

There shouldn't be an option. A person's religious beliefs should have no bearing on how they swear an oath. If we could choose our jurors I'd choose the ones with no religious beliefs at all, because they are obviously the ones who can think for themselves and ignore the bullsh1t.

Or would you choose the "open minded scientists" who also believe in God(from your earlier post)?

And if you lived in a country whose hospitals were totally funded by the church would you sooner die than be treated by a Doctor that was also a monk?

And if you lived in a country where the majority of schools were totally funded by the church would you choose ignorance over education? Don't forget, that education would also give you the intelligence to decide if God existed or not.
