While the Hornet makes a great commuter it still has a big 180 rear tyre which for a pair is about ?200. Also fuel is not that cheap anymore and the Hornet takes about ?15 to fill nowadays and that only gets me 120 or so miles (2 days to work and back). If I had a commuter like the GS500 servicing would be much cheaper, tyres would be about ?75 - ?100 cheaper for a set and also things like insurance is about ?150 cheaper. It doesn't need to be fun, it's only for commuting. I'd have the Triple for weeknd and fun. I thought it was a pretty sensible idea (for me) and could potentially save me a fair amount of money in a year.
sounds like a car would be cheaper for commuting

Cars and scooters are not an option. It would take me 2.5 hours to get to work in a car and a scooter.....well.....it's a scooter!

I hate commuting. Motorways are no fun in rush hour, especially at these temperatures.

B roads are almost worse as they take twice as long.

I wish I could work from home.......

Sell the Hornet, buy a cheap & cheerful Dullville. Will run forever and can get good mileage from tyres.

I love my commute and it's pretty much the only reason I stay in my job 25 miles away. If I were in your shoes I would ride the triple on my commute, and give it a bloody good seeing to every week... wait, that sounds faintly dirty.

Just my 2p

I would keep the Hornet - dont get the Trumpet - you will only sell it at the end of summer anyway...? It certainly wont ride through winter without taking a more than average beating and you'll be getting frustrated watching & paying for something thats not going to be used over this period. Hardly worth the effort or depreciation and fun of riding the GS?

Have we? Closest thing I've ridden to a GS500 was the DAS ER5, and I thought that was great!*

*Well it was 4 times the engine of the previous bike I was riding.

Oh Dan, keep the hornet, then sell the Triple to me in the Autumn.
