As with all of these things; look who is profiting from this.
1. Oil companies (higher profit on each barrel) 2. Government Now, they're having talks to bring the price down....riiiight. Who is giving us the warnings that we're running out of oil and it's inevitable? 1. Oil Companies 2. The Government Everyone knows it's the commodity market being shaken up by *ankers wanting to line their own pockets at the expense of millions of peoples lives. Capitalism sucks. |

Stock Northwind response to fuel price thread, stop me if you've heard this one:
1) Fuel taxation including VAT is lower in real terms than in was in 2000. It's still high of course but it's actually decreasing, not increasing as most believe. The current fuel price peak is driving up VAT but still not to the level of the cuts since 2000. It's just maths. But the lie about fuel tax has been told so often by so many people that it's now replaced the truth. 2) To drop fuel prices to 90p by cutting tax would cost approximately 10 billion pounds, which would have to come from somewhere. 1/8th of the total school budget, 1/10th of the NHS. Will it be your local school that closes to provide you with cheaper petrol?

![]() I have also heard a few reports that it is based on institutional investors buying oil futures, and this is pushing up the price of oil to huge amounts. The same reports have noted that demand has actually slightly dropped worldwide. Although in theory peak oil makes sense, at this point in time it's 'truthfulness' so to speak does depend on some important assumptions, such as how much of the oil we've discovered, and technology not improving (thus being able to extract some of the more difficult reserves of oil). I choose to not believe one side or the other until I have facts and figures I can use to decide for myself; however I do need to stop being lazy to do that ! The phrase There's lies, damned lies, and statistics has never rung truer. |

Please keep on saying this loud and clear at every opportunity! I agree that fuel prices are shockingly high and they have a worrying impact on other costs such as food. BUT it's short sighted and lazy thinking to blame the current government and to therefore expect them to do something about it What about the Shell drivers that have just refused an offer to raise their pay from £37,000 or so to over £41,000? They're going to go on strike now. Is this right or wrong? It's a historic problem with a solution that's long term (if there's a solution at all) . If your kid catches measles what's the point in thumping the kid next door that he caught it from. Intelligent ideas for solution are what's needed

There's a fuel protest planned for July 4th on the A55 too.
heading from Queensferry down to Colwyn Bay. This one has the backing of a couple of people high up in Flintshire County Council. If only I didn't have to be in the office. ![]() |
