Does rather sound like time for a new one. After one of those peel-me-off-the-ceiling moments when the (NHS) dentist I saw as a kid found a nerve whilst being distracted by his nurse showing him someone else's x-rays I did not go again for over 20 years.

Finally plucked up the courage and went again when I got dental cover with a new employer and went private. Suddenly I was the centre of attention, things were explained, the dentist was not rushing between three rooms (one in action, one in prep, one recovering), and it was remarkably civil. I'm now remarkably relaxed about the experiences and had no problems when a very old filling had to be replaced last year needing my first ever oral injection.

Last year I spent the guts of £300 on root treatment on a molar. I remember the third session, the dentist said, it's ok, the root is dead now, you do not need numbed.......so he stuck the wee scrapy thing in the tooth and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAARGH!!!

I jumped out of the chair...to which he said.."are you feeling some pain?"

So then when it was apparently finished and filled, I went to work and later on I bought a bag of chips. I started to chew a chip and the pain was so bad I thought, and so did everyone else, I was going to pass out. Tried to get an emergency appointment but they refused to give meone!!

JOKE!

And I pay £15 a month private fees for the priviledge.

+1

I used to totally dread going to the dentist, not helped by a previous bad experience, and even managed to avoid it completely for 7 years at one point.

However going private recently has changed my my opinion of dentists completely - the time taken, environment and approach mean that it is a totally different experience. Not saying that there aren't great dentists on the NHS, but they don't always get the time to put people at ease, etc.

It is a bit more expensive but actually not that much more than some NHS places, and in the long run me going regularly will hopefully save money on more expensive treatments further down the line.

Jayne I hope you get your tooth sorted, and rmemeber that you have the choice about where you go, so try somewhere else until you find someone you like and trust. It makes such a difference!

I pays the money to go private, dont care how much it costs, its worth it.
Always relaxed, plenty of discussion and explanation, most of all - no fear.

I've been with NHS dentists all my life. I recently moved and registered with a different dentist to the practise I've been with four the past 20 years or so. In all cases, I've never had any issues whatsoever.

Just goes to show that as with everything in life, you can't tar everyone in a particular group with the same brush...

I haven't been to the dentist since I've lived in the UK (nearly 2 years now). Back home (Canada) I've had the same dentist my entire life (check up every 6-9 months). He's awesome. He's also English: When I told him I was moving to the UK he warned me "Do not let them work on your teeth". That was good enough for me -barring any emergencies I'll stick to cleanings and go see him again when I'm back for a visit

If this was a booked appt then she should have put the filling in end of... are you saying that she hasn`t even put a temorary filling in?? If so and you are still in pain book an emergency appt tomor and go back.

Think carefully about the crown.... would the absence of a tooth show if it is removed? I`m only saying that because for the past 3 years I`ve had nothing but abcesses and trouble with my crown and I`ve had to have 2 operations in hospital as a result of poor dentistry (in my opinion). My choice now is to have a new crown or the tooth removed and i`m opting to have it removed. Having said that the last 2 appts. I made have been cancelled by the dentist at short notice so i`m left in pain and swallowing pain killers and can`t have the tooth removed til December now.

Best of luck with your treatment
