Scottoiler, nuff said.
Really come into their own on a long trip IMHO.

Take your most knackered boxers/Y-fronts/thongs on the trip. Once you've worn them. use them to wipe the crud off the chain and then bin them. As already suggested get a mate to pull the bike over onto the side-stand, lifting the rear wheel off the deck. I use a 'notched prop' under the right-hand paddock stand bobin when I do mine. It's quicker and easier than puting the bike on the paddock stand. Oh, and, any chain lube is better than no chain lube.

I don't see the point of lubing a chain when some nice man has designed a cheap and effective device that will do it for me. All I have to do is lift the chain now and then with my boot toe to check adjustment (7000 miles and only adjusted 1/6th turn of the bolt) and have a quick squint at the resevoir to see if there's plenty of oil left (Only topped up the touring kit once at 4500 miles) |

Bout the same for me. I'll get a touring kit when I stop being tight. you get a REALLY clean chain if you forget to turn it back from prime when you fill it -bit expensive to run mind, it emptied the entire res in about 100 miles!

Still easier than sitting there scrubbing with paraffin. Well worth the very low cost of the oil in my opinion

I have a 5 litre can of Husqvarna chainsaw oil that cost a tenner. I've had it for longer than I care to remember but it's coming to the end of the road now and I need to buy another. It's certainly been cheaper than original Scottoil at a fiver a 500ml bottle.
I won't use old bike engine oil for the same reason I won't put it in my engine. I know it'll only get thown off but there's something tells me it won't be as effective as fresh oil, and 5 litres for a tenner was a bargain so I didn't feel any real cost. |

I agree that is cheap enough to not even factor into equation of running cost.
I think you might find it is more expensive now though!
