Certainly are. They did a rather tasty red to go on the frame of the Ex's YPVS. I may be wrong but I think he sent his SRX frame there recently too. Its the only place he goes. I'm not overly concerned when its something like my two rear subframes on the SVs. I used local for them, they're covered with plastic, and what I got was what I paid for, which was satisfactory for those particulars, if it had been wheels or frames I'd send em to SSS without hesitation, even if you do pay for the quality and service a bit more.

Don't forget to grind the OD of the old ones down so you can get them out!

Before you go full steam ahead with powder coating be aware there is a powder coat/paint argument with fors and againsts on both sides. The bearings need to come out due to the heat used to cook the powder coat. Cuffy's bro will replace the bearings as part of the deal.

Be careful who you send your aluminium parts to - I have seen several wheels turned to rubber by unsuitable heat treatment, slack bearing recesses is a common problem too.
If you must have them powder-coated make sure the place you're taking them to knows what they're doing.

Oooh, I think we need Cuffy to confirm this as I thought that Cuffy's bro will install whatever bearings you supply him with into to wheel after he has finished.

He's right you know, if you supply him with the bearings and seals he will replace them for you. If you don't then he'll either leave them out or install your old ones, what ever you've specicfied really.

Excuse the expression but will he 'knock one/them out' if the bearings are left in when he gets the wheel?

He will remove bearings/seals but if they prove to be an ar$e to get out he might charge labour costs!
Best to try and strip down the best you can. |

Back in the mid 1990's, I used to go to a powder coater in Box, between Bath and Chippenham. Strange place box, kind of damp with a long dark tunnel that loads of people have tried getting into. I am not sure if they are still there though.
![]() Anyway, I had a couple of steel frames coated by a company in Plymouth in 2002 and was not hugely impressed with it, they did not clean one the frames properly after dipping and stripping which caused spots of discolouration where the colour had reacted with the dirt. Luckily it was in an area that you could not see. ![]() The down side I found to the finish though was that the shine was lost pretty quickly and in some places the plastic actually cracked which let water in and caused rust. Bare in mind that these were just mountain bike frames too. In future, I think I will use a paint finish to anything I want to look nice for a long time, or have the plastic lacquered afterwards to keep the shine. The frame I still have is now hanging on my bed room wall (a custom made touring bike frame that I retired in 2009 after covering several thousand miles) and came up a treat with a clean and a fresh coat of lacquer. It looks so nice, I am tempted to rebuild it, but given that I hardly ride the other bike and have not yet finished my recumbent, I doubt it is really worth doing it. It has to be the most expensive piece of art I own, having cost me in excess of £2000. |
