Compaq IS HP and has been for ages.

Toshiba is a favourite of mine at the moment - typing this on one now, and have one at work.

Sony are good but too quirky/expensive.

Contraversial! Every HP product I've used has been almost useless! My sisters digital camera had to be replaced within a month because the battery life was so poor, my girlfriends PC was unbelievably slow (although a few years old) and we recently got a colour laser printer at work which has been replaced (by a Dell) within a year because it has failed! But thats just me!

Dont buy a Toshiba laptop the screen inverters go all the time its unreal.
I've replaced about 15 this year up 2 now and they was a mix of different models.
We use HP across our network, servers/laptops/desktops. solid kit most of it.
