I usuallly use a dremmell to clear out the gunk in the seal grooves but you have to be really carefull

yeah i was, as usefull as wedging a screwdriver would be to clear the crap, I opted for a hair dressers pick thing, and was careful not to go too hard on it. was very good at getting the crap out from the edges, I could actually see grooves for the dust seal to go into when id finished!

Right guys..... It seems that its leaking ever so slightly. So im going to have to pull them out again and try and see why. I did think that it was going to plan far too well.

There is very little if nothing more I can really clean off them, so im not entirely sure why this is. The pistons were not scored, the most violent thing I used on the fluid seal and inner bore of the piston was a toothbrush so I doubt I have damaged anything in there.

If i take the seals out again, and cover them with red rubber grease, would this increase my chances of making a good seal?

Not sure it will improve the seal, but it's more advisable than using brake fluid on the seals, as that's what makes them go cruddy in the first place I believe.
