Don't you feel that the bike slows down the higher in the revs you go?

So it's faster to change gear earlier as you have more torque?

I think the reason you're not getting past 8.5k in top is because the air resistance at that speed is equal to the force of the engine. Meaning you can't accelerate any more.
Whereas in the lower gears, you aren't travelling as fast, and so air resistance is less and you can keep accelerating past 8.5k.
Thinking about it that way, I think you may be correct lol. I've never really thought about air resistance before.
