Youcould but I'd only want to turn it clockwise instead of the "right" way. i know it's got a locking tab but...

you could mark the crankcase opposite where the timing mark bung is then remove the genny cover and align the marks on the flywheel with the mark you made on the crankcase

For valve clearances it's not that critical, somewhere on the back of the cam is close enough. You should be able to see this when the rocker covers are off

err as someone else said on here is easiest, well think it was one person might be combining two but here goes.

Take the front (I'm assuming you've already taken the rad out to get a view of the cams under the cover) and rear spark plug out to aid lack off compression. Put in say 4th, 5th, 6th gear which ever is easiest for you, and use the rear wheel to spin the engine. Bugger using the front sprocket more bolts to lose and tools to trip over. Remember that you should turn the wheel anticlockwise (normal way of running), I don't know why but apparently it makes a difference but I do it just to be certain.

(P.s. just checking but you mentioned timing hole, you don't need it to do the valve clearances only to time the cams)
