I DON'T recommend using:
- Norton
- Symantec (its a ball ache with updates)
-AVG

Because i work as a technician i constantly have to update antivirus on the laptops/computers. We use Sophos now because its easier to manage across the workplace but previously we had Avast! And never had one problem and it was good and secure. There's a free version and a option where you pay.
Kapersky is a good antivirus also.

Good luck!

This may be slightly off note, so apologies if you've already done it, but have you taken your computer apart recently and cleaned the dust off the fans + CPU heatsink? It'll make a huge difference to performance if you've not. Its part of my occasional deep clean/viral scans etc/Ccleaning/defragging routine when my comp starts to grind to a halt.

Couldn't agree more. Cleaning out your computer and using disc clean up and defrag also gets rid of the temporary files and may get rid of trackers. Another thing that's VERY useful is downloading the Natwest online.banking software they offer on their website its useable whether you're with that bank or not - what it does is track and shows you any print screens that have been taken other than you and blocks/deletes them straight away and who has took it. It also tracks key loggers. Try it out! Its useful to have because people can simply see what your doing by you just opening an attachment off somebody you're unaware of, opening spam emails, accidently clicking on pop ups and also constantly using USB sticks in your computer/laptop.

Good luck & i hope im useful.

Also, its a good idea to have a total wipe out of your computer every so often. I do a full restore using either a Operating System disc or a previous back up disc but if you have Windows 7 it has it on the system and can take you back to that date with a simple click of a button. I do the restore about twice a year and keep my photo, music, documents on a USB.

It helps keeping you safe and also improves your computer performance.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Free and effective.

System image backup every month, covers you against HD failure and any other major calamities.

If you are rebuilding, be careful to ensure you only install software that you really need. Most times I have to unbreak laptops here they are stuffed with useless software, toolbars and the like.
