My bike gets over-looked after so id be suprised if anything fell off plus if a bolt gets removed you should be able to see threadlock remnants so threadlock it back on if thats the case.

The first time I had a problem with the shifter there was no warning, but obviously something was loose. Also if the bike is new to you, sometimes you're not sure what a problem feels like until it happens. We all learn through experience.

the OP says he dropped the bike (didn't check it then) it worked loose ( over what period we're not sure but wasn't checked then either) and then felt notchy and once again not checked, that's three occasions he missed as well as any periodical checks, as I said ignoring the signs seldom fixes things, I cover considerably greater mileage and bits don't fall of mine nor would I expect them to, mainly because anything gets banged or feels unusual it gets check then an there or at worst once a week, I'm perfectly willing to leave a none critical issue until I have time to fix it, but won't leave the investigation (to find out if it is or isn't critical) any longer than necessary.

After the drop I checked things over - seemed ok and the gears worked fine. If there had been poor operation I would have contacted the dealer. About 1000 miles later the shifter fell off. It was a getting little notchy but not enough to set alarm bells ringing. Not being an expert I did not realise the said bolt might work loose and I'm sure it was not so ater the drop. Hindsight is a fine thing but I genuinely was surprised when the thing came apart. The bike is changing nicely now. I will certainly check it now the problem has been highlighted. I am no mechanical expert. I can only respond to things that seem to be going wrong. I put this down to experience as Runako suggests. Have only had the bike a short while and apart from this, it has been superb. Thanks for the input guys.

every 3500 miles i clean/grease all pivot points as part of the service. this gives me a chance to inspect things like bolts/washers/clips to make sure that they are still secure.

Same happened to me. Dropped bike. Got part replaced at dealer. Went to Wales AR and more no problem then it suddenly dropped off on an Essex rideout. I'd only checked bike the. day before and it was fine.
