so if what jonboy says is correct,
you could easily save yourself some dollars,

personally, i do most of it myself, only the really complicated stuff i give to the dealer.

most of the service is a piece of p*ss anyway.

No

The bike is back to running order but has some sort of nasty click-click sound in 2nd gear (I've not heard it, so can't describe it any better). 1st and 3rd are ok, so it would seem I might have lost some teeth from 2nd. Gearbox has got to be stripped down to investigate.

There's even the possibility that the gearbox fault caused the chain to break, rather than the other way round. Now wouldn't that be an interesting warranty claim?

I'm missing my bike (and not looking forward to the bill)

Rob, it would most likely be easier and very probably cheaper to get another engine off of Ebay for approx £350.

Good grief, I hope you're joking, jonboy

No further news yet, but looking at the parts making up the gearbox on this US site:

http://www.ronayers.com/fiche/300_03...0&parent=11810

I'm hoping it'll be part no. 4 (GEAR,2ND DRIVE, $43) or part no. 20 (GEAR,2ND DRIVEN, $46), or perhaps both if I'm really unlucky. Add on, say, £50 for labour and I'll be sorted

Default V Twin on a bench *more pics*

Some news... the gearbox has been taken to bits and the problem confirmed as a single tooth missing from the 2nd gear cog.

Went along to see it today and took some pics. Not for the squeemish... an SV stripped of all dignity and lying on the autopsy table:

The offending article. That little blighter should not be lying on the bench

I offer some free advice: if you're wondering whether your chain needs replacing, just replace it! Don't think about it. Sooner rather than later is very highly recommended.
