I've seen a bandit 6 that snapped tha crank after it was ridden for a week with an extra litre and a bit. Owner thought that 5 litres was the right amount, we asked him about the sight glass and he gave us a blank look. How we laughed

the new pointy version sv needs to be less than half on the sight glass or it throws it into the air filter, i took my sv back to the dealer after its service complaining of too little oil and that is what they told me.

Noufy, dont take any chances mate

Was a mechanic for a few years and laterly a senior techie with VW/AUDI/BMW and did a lot of factory training with the manufacturers

Over filling with oil WILL cause serious damage to any engine, as some peeps have mentioned, from fouling air cleaners to physically snapping crank shafts/con rods etc, if really over filled then oil that has went via breather pipes to the air cleaner and into the combustion chambers (the excess that wont burn) can smash valves and pistons and embedd them into the cylinder heads etc, honest mate, have seen the damage it can do to a right few engines

Dont want to be all doom and gloomy but drain the excess as a matter of urgency mate then you can ride in peace

That's a load of complete ****!

We always make sure that it is almost to the full level for our race bikes and never have any problems.

over filling is BAD, because its' splashing around, it will get foamy and have air bubbles in it and it won't lubricate properly

I think you need to be a bit more sure about how much was in it, and how much is in there now, to be honest. But if you think it's low, DON'T RIDE IT!

If you have lost that much oil in 3 days... Well, it'd depend on how many miles, if you'd done a Nick Sanders then that'd be less worrying... You're either leaking a lot, burning a lot, or both. Leaks, you should notice. If you've burned a litre or more of oil in a few hundred miles, then you ought to be able to see it in the exhaust- smoky. Exactly what would cause it, I don't want to say- don't know for sure. But I'd think bad piston rings, or damaged piston or bore, if it's that bad.

Does it usually lose oil?

It would appear th ebest advice is...get rid of it till it's at the normal level. Whether you syringe it or sump it....DO get rid of it.

It CAN and WILL do damage if there's too much oil running around in there.

I blew valves and pistons in my first CBR by overfilling it with oil. There was white smoke from the exhaust too which was a dead giveaway. Pistons blew and boll**ed the engine rightly. Believe me.
