so the next time this particular car knocks a biker off (god forbid) then i would feel really good in myself knowing that being untaxed and possibly (well likely) uninsured, I could have done something about it

not to mention the fact i had to park my car 300 yards from my house last night, in the ****ing down rain

hmm, generally I would agree that people should have tax & insurance, especially if driving on the road.

But from the other side of the fence, we got fined £430 recently for having an untaxed van 'on the public highway'. It had been temporarily SORN'd and was being kept off the road for a few weeks while we arranged for parts and a new MOT in order to be able to renew the tax.

Some grass told the council it was untaxed and they kept writing us really nasty letters about how they were going to fine us for having 'abandoned' it (outside our own house BTW) and each time we had to call and explain to some grumpy council official. The council did however confirm that where it was located did not technically constitute 'the public highway' and thus we were OK to leave it there untaxed as long as it wasn't abandoned.

That is until the DVLA decided that in their book the grass it was parked on actually was a highway and gave us a hefty fine.

So what the hell were we supposed to do? Can't drive it somewhere else, can't get tax until have MOT and can't do that without the parts. If you don't have tax, you have to have SORN, and that's only OK if you're off the road (which we believed we were). Stupid system that you try and go along with and then you get fined because some ass decides to grass you up.

If you had been the one that did that to me I'd have been real peed off...

*climbs on a suitably statured equine beast* Too right, tax dodgers, nobody should feel guilty about shopping a tax dodger - they're ripping off Joe public left right & centre, pushing our taxes up to compensate for the inability/refusal to pay - if they do not have the ability to pay, they shouldn't have the vehicle - sell it/get rid, it's not hard. Anyway, I've paid my road tax this year and look where my machine is!!

*Dismounts, gets coat and suitable running shoes, exit stage left....SLAM*

not gonna get into a slagging match over this BUT you could have towed or transported the van to a repair place or offroad parking (unfortunately the grass at the side of the road is usually still classed as a public higway or at least public property) anyway how long was a "few weeks" cos a mere 52 of them is a year ( :P sorry i'll get my coat )

Mark, either phone DVLA direct & report 'em or you need a CLE 2/6 for to report them - no you don't need to be a copper or a traffic warden to 'shop' 'em...

If there's one thing that winds me up its people not paying their road tax; I've got to pay it, you've got to pay it, so why the hell shouldn't they

I have no qualms at all about shopping people. Have done so, will continue. I have to pay, so they should too. Yes I know there are cases where people don't need to tax - eg like Rizla - and some cases (like yours truly) where people forget, but in most cases it's blatantly dishonest.

I got a fine from DVLA because I forgot. When I got the letter I was so shocked I couldn't believe that I'd not taxed the car - we have two cars and a bike, the other 2 vehicles are and were txed, it was simply that I was so busy that I overlooked it
