Yes, youre not paying a licence for the TV as such but for receiving the signal. So even if you put it through a projector you still need a licence.

They sent an inspector round and I let him in the house. As he said, if he comes in sees I dont have a TV then they can accept it, if I didnt let him in I would keep getting letters and visits. Once they saw I didnt have a TV they have left me alone since then. No letters or visits whatsoever.

Surely they would have to come back from time to time to check - whats to stop someone less honest than your good self getting a TV in the meantime ? or do they still use detector vans?

I think it sucks we are forced to pay, and its reported to be going up by another £30!

We should get a choice. People should be able to choose to pay and then watch and listen to BBC channels and people who choose not to pay can't access the BBC stuff. Personally I so rarely watch or listen to BBC channels I resent having to pay for it.

When you buy a TV from a shop they are obliged to report the sale and the name/address of the purchaser to the licencing authority.

I bought a new telly last year and got a few stroppy letters from them because the TV licence isn't in my name.

There was talk recently of charging licence fee for computers capable of receiving broadcast signals (ie downloads)

I know a fella who's never paid for a tv license. He rents so every time they come knocking on his door he tells them he didn't realise the license hasn't been paid and that they should take it up with the landlord because he owns the house. Been fobbing them off like that for ages.

Doubletap... having seen the almost constant stream of unmitigated ****e that the US spew out onto the TV networks, and having seen the stuff BBC produce, I can tell you that it's one of the best 100 pounds you are ever going to spend.

The TV here is so bad, that I simply dont even attempt watching it. If I want to see Rome, House, Weeds, The Sopranos or whatever, I either just get it on demand or from Netflix.

I am not saying that all TV shows here are muck. But, that they float around in such vast seas of muck, I cant be bothered searching for them.

A marble bust of Marice Laure, inventor of VAT. It's TRUE!

I gather the old licence-evasion routine's a bit harder now, with so many graphics cards having TV functionality, and with there being so many reasons to own a TV that don't include, well, watching TV...
