A quick question about decent shocks, like ohlins - do they need revalving if you fit a spring that's much harder or softer than standard, or is there enough adjustment in the damping to allow it to be suited to the spring?

I've heard standard OEM shocks have such a small range of damping they'll be crappy with a harder spring and the damping won't be enough - is this the case with a good aftermarket shock?

I think there is something not quite right here.

A shock service for £70? Thats is seriously far to cheap imo which would lead me to beleive it isnt being done properly or everything that should be done as part of a shock service just simply isnt being done.

I've stood and watched steve jordan service a shock and it took him best part of 3 hours to do and tbh i sont think there was anyeway he could have done it any quicker without cutting corners.

I'm not saying K-tech dont do it right i'd just be wary of it.

Have a ring round and i'd lay money on the fact jusat about every ohlins dealer you speak to will charge about the £120 mark.

Thats a reasonable charge.

When i sent my penske to get revalved they charged £50, but a full service would have cost around £100. So a tad cheep, unless they are planning on not changing anything.

That's pretty much what I paid for the basic service (paid extra for the spring, new parts etc)- and no question that it wasn't worked on, since it got a new reservoir and bushing fitted- can't do the first without regassing or the second without having the shock in bits. Exactly what else's involved in the service, I don't know, though. Jordans gave me a quote for a respring, new reservoir and service that was just not economically worthwhile, would have been better to sell the shock and buy a new one- though they were totally open about that so all credit to them there, Sarah actually suggested it.

ERS, Youngs and a couple of smaller shops I contacted both quoted similiar amounts to Ktech, but with longer turnaround and higher parts costs, so I went with Ktech. They completely ballsed it up, mind, they fitted the spring I'd ordered to another customer's bike then had to order in a new one for me Still, they were very good about it, couriered the shock back next day instead of using the slow post that I paid for, things like that.

Out of interest, what sort of mileage do you get out of an ohlins before needing a service and does it noticeably "go off" as it gets nearer the need for the service or is it more a "you should have it serviced every 2 years/10,000 miles regardless" sort of arrangement?

In most cases a service is just a regassing of the shock and a rebuild is exactly what it sounds like. If you can find someone that includes new seals, hoses, etc. in the price for a service then I have to wonder how they make any money out of it.
