my neighbour who is an old spitfire engineer.. (well he was when he was alive)..


always used to go mad at me when I was revving my engine warming it up.. and had it on choke .

he said something about it not being "under load" . and said I was a "noisy bugger!

If you doubt the battery, it's a good opportunity to get one of the newer Yuasas, which are dynamite for cold starting... Higher capacity, higher output, all round good news.

I changed to super unleaded and that made cold starting much better. That and an opti-mate at least now if it starts then stalls I get another shot at starting it. In my pre-optimate days it was one shot then no chance. Also I always make sure I have turned lights and heated grips off when starting in the cold to give the battery as much chance as possible to kick it over and keep it running.
