Yeah i know what you mean i have had that quite a bit normally giving the shift a bit more of a kick to make sure its in second works . shouldnt worry about it,

DOES ANYONE elses bike make a really nasty crunch sometimes when dropping in to first gear? because sometimes mine feels like it really grinds and the crunches, but only sometimes. anyone had that ?? ? ?

About the crunch into 1st gear, yes mine does that more often than not, I try to roll the bike back and forth to get it to engage "nicely" without having to force it against its will.

I'm on a 650S K5 with 4500 miles on the clock. Oil is fresh.

Any other people or is it just the two of us?

650S K5 4750 on the clock (old oil).
No crunches here, but I don't push hard, if it doesn't want to go in, which I do get, with a light tap then I don't force it.
Instead I let the clutch out slightly, then pull it in again and then it drops in sweetly.
I think this a bit like double-declutching, or when you're trying to find a stubbon reverse in a car. When in neutral, letting the clutch you to spin the gearbox a bit then trying again seems to work better. I don't know what the mechanical reason for this is though

No my K3 does it as well. Sometimes I release the clutch a little and sometimes I just force it (my girl likes it rough sometimes!).

My gear changes aren't the smoothest at the best of times tho!!!

Personally I would be worried if I were having lots of false neutrals. On the Sv you do rely a lot on the engine braking, and the snappy acceleration. Wouldn't think it was the gearbox, rather the linkage (good tip from Northwind on that one), maybe clutch or rider error. Best to look at all 3 IMO.
