Number 1. Jimi. There can be no arguments about this. He changed the way electric guitars were played.
No 2. Kirk Hammett. MIT trained and teaches there I believe. No 3. Slash. Just sooooo laid back. And the others in no particular order; Dave Gilmore Snowy White Andy Fairweather-Lowe Angus Young Robert Johnson Steve Vai Joe Satriani John Williams! |

Saw Gary more a few times back in th eighties, brilliant axe man.
Jeff Healey is also really good, he's a blind guy who plays the guitar on his lap. Live he's incredible. Lots of others come to mind over the years including Jimi Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie Clarke, Pete Way, Mick Box .... |

It's Slash for me. The blokes an absolute legend.
He owns over 250 guitars and is responsible for the Sweet Child O' Mine solo. Respect. |

I'm a victim of the 80's so Nuno Bettencourt, Stevie Vai and Joe Satriani still shred for me.

Best guitarist. Well , whist you have very old blues roots, robert johnson, then newer with the 3 kings (albert, BB, and freddy). The next generation hendrix and clapton, especially in his 60's cream style. You need someone whos drawn on all of them as influences, and would therefor suggest that Stevie Ray Vaughan was a bloody good gutiarest. Up there next to (not below) clapton, hendrix, and bb king. Buddy Guy... Just totally live wire playing, quite stunning.
Matt Bellamy from Muse is, potentially, going to be remembered as one of the greats too- he's got immense natural skill, a good sense of when to let loose and when to reign it in, he's equally at home with rhythm and lead... Incredible variety of playing too, sometimes in a single song. Citizen Erased- the live one off the Hullabaloo DVD- really shows this off. Then ends with him on piano just to show off. But he's also better with effects, toys etc than most, so he's got a wider range of weapons at his disposal- maybe not for the purists but guitar playing's more than just 6 strings and an amp I reckon. One of the best guitarists I've seen recently is Anita Robinson from Viva Voce... The albums are a huge disappointment ![]()
