Couldn't find a bearing with integral dust seal locally.
Yes its does seem strange that I had this problem. I've been through loads of entries on the subject on this site and on other SV related sites from the US and none experienced problems. Thinking back I did file off some imperfections at the base of the yoke where I used a chisel to pry the old bearing off. I used a fine file and took care to only provide a flush base for the new bearing to sit in, filing only the imperfections. Maybe that caused it. I must stress that little filing where necessary was done. After putting in a custom made 1mm washer/dustseal I now have 1.25mm clearance between headstock and yoke which I've measured with feeler gauges. Strange huh Charles when you have 1.5 without stock seal? Well, all's right now. Took the bike for a spin yesterday and boy it was fun. It's been a month since I've ridden it and with the new Mezeler M3 rubber in it felt great. It corners so much better now and feels very confidence inspiring. Had to adjust a bit to the power of the SV for the first 2 miles or so as I've become accustomed to the lower power of the 125cc bike I use for daily commutes, but after that wow! |

I'm going to give this a go at the weekend, where can a fella buy these fangled taper roller bearings? Bike is a pointy if it matters.

They look pretty average to me. Also, they do not appear to have an integral dust seal. Unless the ones shown are for illustration purposes only. Your best bet would be to obtain some Koyo bearings, as I have found these to be of excellent quality. Your local bearing factor may be able to help you here. The part numbers you require are; 32006JRRS (integral seal) & 32005JR (no seal). Alternatively, give me a yell & I can send a pair out to you. Cheers. Afternoon all.
Good show Zunkus, glad to hear you got it sorted. It's amazing the difference decent bearings make to your steering isn't it? As the old bearings go off slowly, one tends to adapt ones riding to compensate for it. I always warn people that the bike will handle differently to how it did before, I had one customer whose steering bearings were REALLY bad, he wrenched the handlebars round the way he used to before the bearings were replaced, & promptly dropped the bike in the middle of the road outside my workshop! OUCH! Cheers. |

So true SpannerMan.
The bearing plus the new tyres makes the bike feel brand new again, so much I needed to re-adjust my riding on it. All for the better it now steers like a dream. |
