Ha ha. Exactly. BEHOLD MORTAL... I am Exon.

Nah. Its like this.
I have a ten mile commute to work.
I cycle my bike usually (although not in the depths of winter).
I am almost killed on a daily basis by <insert expletive>s driving like <insert expletive>.
SUVs screaming passed me, skimming my elbow, headlong into a string of traffic stretching off into the distance, just in time to slam on their brakes as I cruise quietly past them.
And as I pass them, I look into their cars and SUVs, one person, ****ed off, per car. Clogging up the roads.
When I get into work you can't hear yourself think for the weeping, and wailing, and pleading and histrionics.

They still drive though.
They still wont even consider options.

But but... its so dangerous... it's different for you... you're so fit... you're used to it.

Bring it on as far as I'm concerned. $200 per barrel here we come. Yaay.

Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.

Heh heh.

I like your hatred and agree completely. I think we should get together and take over the world.

Some of us aren't fortunate to be non-reliant on oil based fuels on a day to day basis though.

Try getting my 3 kids out of bed in time to get to school (7 miles away - there isn't a school closer, and moving house isn't a realistic option) for 08:30.

If they are out of bed, try getting them all to walk the 14 miles (per day). Bare in mind my youngest is 3, and only in school half a day. So if we did manage to walk to school, then walk home. It'd be time to pick him up again, so walk there, walk back home with him, and it's time to get the others from school (average walking speed of 4mph assumed - though he's a lot slower than that due to stops for curiosity). Walk back to school to pick the eldest two up, walk home, leaving enough time for tea & bed.

Lets not forget that at least 3 miles of that is a "main" A road with no path at the side of it, and a 50mph speed limit, with cars/bikes/vans/lorries etc mostly exceeding the posted limit. Hardly a safe environment to walk.

Public transport you say? You obviously don't live out in the sticks where busses come approx once every 2 hours (on a weekday). Those that do run through the village, don't run to school. It would actually take 3 bus trips to get from the village to school, and the cost of one adult (minimum) and the 3 kids on 3 seperate bus trips is reasonably comparable to the cost of petrol for the same journey (given that the bus routes aren't as direct as driving yourself).

For some of us, reliance on oil is an unfortunate necessity.

Do I want the government to drop the tax rate? Not really, as they'll only take the tax from somewhere else (as per Nothy's post).

Do I want the cost of petrol reduced? Hell yes. I'd like the cost of my mortgage reduced too, but I don't hold any hope of protests doing that. With fuel prices, there's at least some hope that protests will do something.

Couple of things here though:

- The thing that might get people worked up is that much of the 'demand' is from investors in oil rather than direct users of petrol/diesel (i.e. motorists). So, not only is it not demand from the petrol consumers, it's not even demand from consumers of other oil products - it's just investors buying it in the hope that the (financial) product they have bought will make them money. Commodities are pretty hot right now, but again some say it is a boom just waiting to crash, much like the subprime market when the market realises it's overpriced itself.
- The price of oil affects much more than just the price of fuel. One thing peak oil has correct is our dependence on it, that cannot be argued. A lot of things use oil and thus need to go up in price if oil goes up in price. So it's not wise to limit the 'argument' to petrol prices only (although yes that is what the thread is about).

Does no one else think this whole thing is even slightly amusing?
I'm not a religious person, but its hard not to think that the man upstairs is having a giggle at this.

You have the US, economically thriving, wealthy, powerful.
Greedy.
They "elect" a man to run their country, renowned for his stupidity. He decides he is not entirely sold on this whole climate change thing, and thinks doing nothing would be the safest bet.

And he wants to be just a liiittle more greedy still, so he starts a war to protect their precious oil hidden under those A-rabs deserts.

Woops...a line seems to have been crossed.
The man upstairs wants pay back.
  • Your lies and greed will be exposed for the world to see.
  • The war will burn you more than you could even have imagined.
  • Your most precious symbol of wealth, the slightly rubbish, inefficient heavy, poor handling car will be pried out of your hands.
  • Your oil addiction will start to destroy you.
  • Your economy will take a beating that will take a while to forget, and your currency will be devalued beyond recognition.
  • .... hmmm... lets see.. not quite even yet, I know... you're getting a smart, black President.
Now.
How do you like them apples?

Its the biggest cosmic FU I've seen for a while.
