Now then just an update. Got it all into little bits . I'm no mechanic so just wondering if it all go back together! Have a look at these pictures.

It all seems fine to me, I'm wondering if it is the screen now because it looks like the spindle has melted from the top (ie the side next to the screen) and not the other way (from the speedo face). What do you guys think?

Thanks I now understand! Am I right in saying LED's don't get as hot as a bulb? Therefore making it even less likely it's the heat from the dash?

Looks like the double bubble screen is doing it to me.

Blimey you like to get stuck in!

Somewhere on that thar PCB (printed circuit board) are some tiny little LEDs which light up your dash. They don't get very hot at all.

I was trying to be funny and clever in my previous post. Unfortunately I am neither!

Got to be the screen. I can't really think of a way around it other than covering the dash when you leave it on bright days. Or change the screen of course.

This has started to happen to me on my 02 Curvy S. Not to the same extent as you but the plastic cover (lense) on the rev counter is starting to show signs of melting.

I have a standard screen and the bike is outside most of the time.

I have done a little research into this and the cause appears to be the sun striking the back (inside) of the screen rather than passing through it.

When the sun hits the back of the screen it acts as a parabolic reflector and concentrates the sun onto the gauges (think curved mirror rather than lense).

To avoid this park the bike so that the sun cannot hit the back / inside of the screen.

The MRA DB screen, with it's black gradient fade-out on the underside should reduce the risk of the counter melting.

Not for the reason you may think. As said it has little to do with light transmission / refraction but rather reflection, so the tint doesn't really matter. (The OP also said that he had a dark screen).

However MRA have reasearched this issue and redesigned their screens to avoid the problem. They also offer a warranty against melting clocks etc when using their screens.

For details see here
