Just be gentle with it. A toothpick or something would be the ideal wooden tool but may well snap.

a toothpick worked on mine. Run it around the whole of the seal then it should come without much of a struggle

right Ive replaced the seals and rubber boots, put the pistons back in, new pads, put the calipers back on the bike, new crush washers fitted, new fluid and bled the system a lot (no bubbles). I feel like I could have a better lever, it still feels like it could be tighter if you know what I mean. like it should have less movement, theres around 20mm between the lever and the grip at the slimmest piont, on what I can assume are stock levers.

is that as good as it will get? it feels a lot better than it did before I stripped it.

Put a cable tie over the lever overnight and review in the morning

If you've replaced the rubbers and fluid I can't think of much else to do. (and you're positive you;ve got all the air out the system)

what will the cable tie do? will i need to bleed it again in the morning?

Im pretty sure all the air is out, Ive still got quite a bit of fluid left so I could keep going if I need to.

oh yeh I have the braided lines on too

it will help any air in the system rise in to the rez, remember to leave the brake rez cap lose as well so the air can escape (according to hel any way lol)

I think there may be a slight flaw in your theory there.

The transfer port connects the res and the system together. Piston is covering it when the lever is depressed.

Cable tie trick allows pistons to creep out a bit in their seals if they are returning too far. As far as I can see it cannot allow any movement of air.
