I heard people say you should avoid running two different brands. I wouldn't know because I have never and would never run two different brands. The counter argument is if they are two radials then its fine. My argument is that the tyres provide the most feedback on the bike so its necessary to really understand what the tyres of capable of when riding. Therefore I always use two of the same and generally both new (sometimes 2 to 1 if doing a lot of motorway mileage).
The choice of tyre depends very much on type of riding. 70%+ commuting? Go for Pilot Roads or similar. 1, 2 or 3 depends on budget and just how much extra feel / longevity you want but similar feedback. Same principle for the Pilot Power. 70% Fast road + Trackdays = PP's. 3 offers significantly better rear tyre life. They all offer similar feel and are stable at lean. I'll leave others to recommend other brands. Btw, rather than relying on the search function, go to the tuning section or reviews and check out the tyres sticky. Thanks Runako, I won't be doing a lot of commuting, my commute isn't that much fun on a bike. I know that running two different brands is a no no. I'm just going to put up with them until they're knackered, won't be long. Then fitting something decent. Riding wise, I intend to use the bike for quickish recreational rides whenever time and weather allow and a few track days.

Ive used and am still using mixed brand tyres on road and track and they dont cause instant death! but it is the prefered choice to have matched tyres.
If i was buying a new pair of tyres id go with any of the current dual compound sports touring tyres! will be fine for your needs unless you run at good pace in the fast group on a track day |

Thanks Chris, I did read last night that mixed brand is fine as long as the tyre constructions are compatable. Mine are both radials and I believe that is ok. Having just acquired the bike and given the time of year and state of the roads I'm going to be taking it very easy anyway.
I won't be doing very high mileages and little in the way of motorway travel and I don't mind paying for good rubber at the cost of decreased durability. I'll take dual compounds, any recommendations folk?

There was an endurance racing team here in the U.S. that ran mixed brand tires because they liked the way they worked together.
I've often mixed brands, always with good results. The only way to find if you like tires or not is to try them. What I like, you might not. Last edited by wideguy; 28-10-13 at 01:03 PM. |

Just completed a 150 mile tour of Snowdonia approaching via the Denbigh moors and passing through Betws-y-Coed, Capel Curig, Bethesda and returning via the A55. Absolutely beautiful run out. The more I ride the SV the more I love it.
Wonderful views of the snowy mountain peaks of Tryfan, Yr Wyddfa, Glyderau and Carneddau. Nice brew at the Idwal Cottage and a focused, engaging run through the drier sections of the Nant Ffrancon pass. Roads were very damp in places and lots of tree poo in places, air was quite cool, visibility bright and good. Got a bit chilly on the home run down the 55 and was very grateful to have R&G heated grips as the air cooled off. What a fabulous Sunday afternoon!

Get the fueling mapped..those exhausts make them run rich, will feel alot crisper after. Last one we did with that type of exhaust was only making just a tad over 65bhp..left with a healthy 72bhp and ALOT healthier MPG.

Many thanks for that tip, she's due in to the workshop on Thursday for routine maintenance so I'll ask techies to look at the mapping. Might fit a performance air filter at the same time.
