no probs here, in fairness though, if its abandoned youd be better setting fir to it, the council are more likely to move it then.

On the one hand I'm in total agreement with this.

But...

you gave them an oppertunity to 'do the honest thing', (or at least explain themselves) and they didn't take it.

I agree that untaxed cars should be reported if they're taking up limited parking spaces on the road. You were brave to report it. You had a word with the gf about an untaxed car parked near her house, and shortly after that the bf would have been done for having no road tax. They'll put 2 and 2 together and the next thing is you might end up with your tyres slashed or a brick throughg your window.

Some people are nice like that.

imho it depends,

if.. the car isnt being moved.. maybe there short on cash and need to wait till pay day before they can afford to buy the tax?

Id rather see the car in a cul de sac than in a car park...

but yes.. it should be taxed and really there is no excuses..

To be honest I've gotta agree i would report em if they are driving without tax like the others have said they prob don't have insurance and thats not on

I was fined for not paying car tax when i first split with my husband car and insurance was in my name but he had the car (at the time) i thought (rather stupidly) that he'd paid it but he hadn't

i wrote and explained this and paid the fine. Like Cloggsy says everyone has to pay car tax why should they get away with it

I wouldn't shop anybody unless I knew they were deliberately driving without insurance. Otherwise, live and let live...

You did the right thing.

After my car was written off and I'd transfered ownership to the insurers who paid out for it, I wrote to them saying they'd best come and clear it away sharpish as the tax had just expired and I'd have no qualms ringing the council to get their wreck removed from outside my house if they didn't do it within the week. It worked.

To my mind, road tax should cover parking too (b-all point in havng a vehicle if you can't park at your destination) and getting somewhere at the end of a long journey and having to park 20 mins walk away somewhat negates the benefit over public transport. If a car is parked up w/o tax on the road, first month, fine, they might be waiting for pay day to pay for the tax, or it may be temporarily lost in the machinations of the DVLA. After that, I'd report it. As people have said, most of us pay 2 lots of road tax, why should we subsidise people who won't even pay for one. Even if it is "only" taking up a parking space.

Hmm, well cheers for the support there.

I'd like to point out that over the last ten years I have also owned 3 cars and 3 bikes, and have never failed or been late in paying my tax, etc on any of them. Until that point the van was fully legal, and I have always paid my council tax, TV licence, etc etc etc.

What frustrates me is that I couldn't do anything about that situation without shelling out several hundred pounds to have a large van towed and stored for 6 weeks - do you happen to have that just lying around, because unfortunately I'm not made of money and don't. And you seem to be missing the point here in that I didn't know I was doing anything wrong because the council told me it was OK to park there without tax.
