How do average speed cameras work?

Most average speed cameras tend to be in roadworks on the motorway or on roads where a large number of accidents have occurred. At least they are clearly visible and normally signposted too, so unless you're a complete moron there's no need to make a sudden dangerous manoeuvre to avoid being caught.

I thought you could report them and they do get a letter from the police. Is that not the case?

You can report them, but it's your word against theirs. So little gets done about it, as you can't be trusted the same as a police officer can.

There is one set of average cameras with a service station halfway through. If I stop for a cup of tea for 10 minutes does that mean I can do 250mph through the last camera and my average speed would only end up at 45mph?

That explains the trucks hammering past me on the 50mph section of the A55 at 70mph and getting away with it , cheeses me right off that NW "Police" ignore these drivers and wag their finger at me for doing 51mph
