Idle Banter For non SV and non bike related chat (and the odd bit of humour - but if any post isn't suitable it'll get deleted real quick).
There's also a "U" rating so please respect this. Newbies can also say "hello" here too.

I can't quite work the maths yet, but I think I've got all the bits and pieces to work it out.
Approximately 1,460 teratonnes of water that covers 70.8% of the earth's surface.
A kilotonne is a thousand tonnes, a megatonne is a thousand kilotonnes, a gigatonne is a thousand megatonnes and a teratonne is a thousand gigatonnes. A lot basically.
The earth's surface is 510,065,600 km2, 148,939,100 km2 is land, and 361,126,400 km2 is water.
The displacement of the QE2 fully loaded is 48,923 tonnes.

Get to it people

one simple assumption:

1 cubic metre of water weighs 1000kg

therefore the QE2 displaces 48,923 cu. m of water

volume is surface area multiplied by height

therefore the height difference is volume divided by surface area

the surface area of the worlds oceans is 361,123,400 sq km

this is equal to 3.61126 x 10e14 sq m

therefore the height difference in metres when the QE2 is removed from the water is:

48,923 cu m / 3.61126 x 10e14 sq m

= 1.355 x10e-10m

or roughly equivelent to about one tenth of the width of an atom

enjoy
