Some types of animal find a mate for life, some dont, so it actually is biology, but which category humans fall into is always debated

+1. Monogamy's extremely common among birds, mammals and other animal groups less so. If a so called less intelligent animal can develop such bonds with partners and stick by them, what's a human's excuse?

In the animal kingdom, is there a strong correlation between intelligence monogamy then?!?

It'd be an interesting experiment to breed humans on a desert island, not introducing any existing culture or religion etc ...

Lets face it on statistical probability alone, we are more likely to fall into the overwhelming category/majority, not the puny monogamous category

You implied that the more intelligent a species, the more likely it is to be (or could be) monogamous i.e. if birds can do it naturally ... we are more intelligent than birds - so surely we can/should/would do it naturally ...

I'd like to see your rationale/scientific reasoning behind such a statement

Bearing in mind the amount of animals between said birds and humans on the 'intellegence' scale that like to 'sh4g around' ... I am not convinced there is any direct 'relationship' (pun not intended) between intelligence and monogamy ...

In humans, I think it is purely down to society and social conditioning ...

That is not what I said. I said that animals who seem to be deemed less intelligent (see Baph's earlier post) are still capable of forming monogamous bonds with a lifetime partner, therefore if a so called less intelligent animal can do this then why should a human being - deemed more intelligent - find it difficult? All animals have the same instincts at the end of the day.

On the other hand it could be said that it is in fact a sign of intelligence to cheat in scientific terms (higher probablility of fathering offspring).

However I understand I may not be talking sense, been a long day

Society and social conditioning created by......humans.

Obviously for many and whatever reasoning ... the majority of humans prefer a monogamous relationship in their own life.
That's why it is the social norm.

guess we need to know why he does it.

Course it is not accepted in large parts of our society, but reality is many people do for a multitude of reasons. It is almost always a bad idea to have an affair.
