You probably need to get some in around the seals, I bet you have bit of corrosion in there.

Best way I have found to remove a seized piston is to zip up a cable tie around it and then use some grips to rotate it out of the Caliper , the outside of the piston is protected by the soft plastic of the cable tie and inside it doesn`t matter does it . Hope this may help a bit . WeMoto are handy for complete seal kits by the way .

I would advise strongly to use the bikes built in, high pressure hydraulic brake piston removal tool.

do i need new seals or can i get away with re-using?

And i've got clamps ready to hold the piston in while pumping out.

99% of time you can reuse them with no problem
