I'm with you on this one Ed, we should look after our own first and foremost, if there is any money left after, then consider foreign aid.

I would hope that no-one has disrespect for our military, yet our government has in the way it treats them on their return and how it looks after their families when they are away.

I'm not against foreign aid in principle, its the fact that our government does it via the Banana Republic foreign governments, thus the bulk of the money gets reallocated to buy guns etc. I'd much prefer that the money is returned to us - the british taxpayer, then we as individuals can decide (if we want and can afford it) to give it away via charity of our choosing.

I agree. When we're in such a comfortable position we're duty bound to help others. But by send such large amounts of money over there we're just upsetting the balance of power; fueling civil wars and genocide. It all comes down to trade; open trade up fairly and the poor can be the ones earning the money. The Americans are the ones crippling the world

A lot of suckers want in on the oil market... yet while these guys want out.
Almost like they know something we dont?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/12/exxon.mobil/index.html

Quote:
Oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp. plans to sell its company-owned gas stations, saying they aren't profitable enough even with gasoline selling at $4 per gallon.

The nation's largest oil company, which earned nearly $41 billion last year, says it will sell more than 2,000 stations over the next few years.
You can put your fingers in your ears all you like boys and girls, the petrol engine's days are numbered. When Exon jacks up the prices, bleeds us dry, and then start selling up you have to notice.

Good riddance.
