I'm confused.
I've been using WD40 for years as a lubricant on my bicycle, but appreciate that it's also a degreasant. If I were to squirt something into the ignition barrel on my SV (for example) to keep everything tip top, should I use an oil like 3-in-1 (which may attract dirt/grit over time) or use WD40 (which may dissolve any grease in the barrel)? What do you think? Cheers.

For an ignition switch WD every time. WD has the added effect that it will disperse any moisture in the switch and will also be perfectly fine for use on electrical gear such as this.

I use engine oil (new engine oil that is!), WD40's a good water dispersal agent but it's not a great lubricant really. WD40 shouldn't cause any problems mind.

I normally use WD40 to "clean" things first (good to get the old grease out) then 3 in 1 to lubricate, then smear a bit of lithium grease around the outside to help keep the 3 in 1 in place and provide a bit of extra protection from water ingress. NB: Talking about moving parts, rather than electricals here.

WD40, is not a lubricant nor is it a penetrating oil etc. and will break down existing lubricants so be careful where you use it.
It must be the worlds most misused product. For locks, use a dry lube

It does repel and kill the highland midge, though, and it's great at removing price tags from CD boxes.

My bike dealer suggested using chain lube on locks / padlocks etc

We talking inside the barrel here?
I need to do mine as it becomes a pain to get off of steering lock if I haven't used it for a couple weeks! |
