Hi all
![]() Had a great ride out in the afternoon, stopped to take some pictures of my bike. 5 mins later, hit some ice (I think) on a roundabout and the bike slid out from under me ![]() The crash bung has done a great job of preventing a lot of damage on the bike (curvy 02 svs) - the main thing is a broken rear brake lever, a hole in the front indicator and a crack in the fairing which is repairable. What I am worried about is looking at the crash bung when I got back, it's definitely at an upwards angle and it looks like it might have bent the engine bolt? Would it be a case of just replacing the bolt or could this cause any damage/put a bend in to the frame? This is the crash bung: ![]() This is the best picture I can get of the mounting point for the bung, it looks like it isn't in line? ![]() I've tried to show the upward angle of the bung: ![]() The other bit of damage I'm unsure about is the exhaust which has a rash on it, I'm really lucky it didn't put a hole in the carbon fibre: ![]() I think getting a new band and rivetting it on in place of the rashed one would be ok? If i could get any advice on these things I would be really really grateful! Many many thanks all ![]() |

to me that looks like its through to the carbon on the end but with a new band it should be ok
![]() and why not take crash bung off and see? |

The bolts are designed to bend, speak to whoever makes the crash bungs and get a new RHS one.
I'd cut 1/2" or so off the carbon fibre (and internal tube), turn the inlet round by 180 degrees and fit a new strap. Druid

Cheers loads Barwel & fastdruid,
I've got a feeling that these bungs aren't made anymore (made by Motrax)so might have to save up for another pair. My main worry is that during the crash the bung, in bending, has moved the engine from its position on the frame mounts? I had thought initially that it was one long bolt connecting the bungs and going through the engine mount but if they are held on by specially-designed-to-bend bolts then the engine/frame wouldn't be affected? Sorry for being thick here ![]() For the can, would I really have to cut it shorter? ![]() Cheers loads again, just want to get my baby back on the road... |

I'd just ride it as is.
![]() Either get a new bolt from suzuki (ie without the crash bung), an identical bolt from a fastener shop or a new set of crash bungs that fit in the same place. As for the exhaust no you don't *have* to cut it but to get it 'mint' again you need to remove that section, best way is to tape it, mark a line where you want to cut and carefully hacksaw it. The tape gives you something to mark, something to prevent damage if the saw skitters off course and holds the CF fibres to give a neater cut. Any loose fibres left afterwards can be cleaned up with a (sharp) set of scissors. Druid

the engine is held in buy more than one bolt so its unlikely to bend all of them as they are all high tensile type, it will just be the end of the bar thats bent
PS R&G crash bungs fit through the same hole "and some other hole i think" if i were to cut the can i would do it with a dremel |

Similar happened with my crash bung on my old pointy. Went down slowly on ice and caused the bar to bend. On the pointy, I simply tapped out the very long bar (which replaces the engine bar) and replaced it with a new one from R&G. Everything then went back in fine.
The thing is, where an engine bar is replaced with a crash bung bar, the week points are between the engine the mount, so hence why you get the kink.

No actual bung fitted in this picture but they fit between the long centre bolt and the upper bolt rather than that one, I've got a second set of crash bungs fitted there ![]() Druid

Im sure the bolts are made of soft metal to bend on impact, and save the valuable bits of your bike, so you should be safe. Grande cojones riding on the ice though!

Cheers again everyone, food for thought!
Gotta look into the bungs and will be probably back with more questions... But I know now that the engine/frame is good so that's a weight off my mind! Thanks loads again ![]() |
