Took the bike from watford to Chatham, kent this afternoon. On the way back doing about 90mph on the M25, i lost all power. Thank God i manage to get across all 3 lanes in one piece. When i went to restart, the lights just flicker. The recovery people gave me and bike a lift home. He seem to think i might have a rectifier\regulator problem.
On my way to kent i could smell the battery and i just manage to start it on my way back. The bike have a new battery 2 weeks ago. Is this the likely cause. And whats the best solution. Thanks |

Why did you replace the battery 2 weeks ago?
If the new battery is a 'fill your own and seal' gel type like a Yuasa, did you follow the instructions correctly? You will knacker those batteries if you do not allow them to cool + 20 minutes after filling before capping them. Were your lights unduly bright before the failure? |

The bike was garaged for the winter b4 i bought it. Took it to the workshop (Colin collins watford) who said i needed a new battery as the old one wasn't holding charge. They fitted it. The instrument light did look a bit bright at the point of failure, but i thought it was because it was getting dark.

Dealers are pretty ignorant or plain lazy when it comes to fitting gel batteries, they often discard the instructions, slap in the acid, let it fizz for a bit then put the caps on. The batteries often fail within a few months because of this. However, by your description it may well be a regulator failure - if the lamps are too bright this is a clue. You need to examine the battery, check if it has swollen, split or looks damaged in any way. If it looks ok, check voltage / charge as nescessary, replace on bike, run bike and check voltage whilst on bike.
There are a few threads running at the moment regarding batteries and regulators, read a few and get some hints. |

Bl@#dy dealer/service won't give me a new battery. Even if he claim to fit one 2 weeks ago. Not covered if rectifier\regulator failed. haaaaaaa. Now he wants me to bring the bike down. I can hear the cash register ringing. No chance.
Can anyone advice where i can find the rectifier\regulator? I also need to take out the old battery. I see a box under the riders seat marked Battery, but not sure how to remove. Thanks |

Do you have a Haynes manual? I had a battery problem a few weeks ago which turned out to be nothing. I cant remember the numbers off hand but you need to check the charging voltages on your battery both at idle and 5000rpm, the voltages of the alternator and then the regulator/rectifier which is located under the right hand panel next to the pillion seat. This should narrow it down a bit. Will post more instructions if you need them.

Thanks AndyB, Sid. I am sure the battery is cooked as i saw it die a slow death on the hard shoulder. Could smell it 2.
Sid, i have been searching from last night. Thanks to all your previous post, i am more aware of how my bike works. Based on your advice, i am thinking of getting an honda or kaw rec\reg from ebay. Are there any specific ones i should look out for? Thanks once again for all your help. |

Be Very Carefull
I fitted a ZX6R regulator to mine, and somewhere down the line had a major problem and managed to blow both headlights, main beam repeater bulb and the ignition switch. I'm not certain yet whether or not the diodes & ECU are also shot I can't put my hand on my heart and be sure it was the regulator itself, it may well have been something I did, or just a coincidence as the reason for changing in the first case was because the existing one was over charging Tris PS I searched the internet for 2 weeks before I got my hands on a wiring diagram. |
