Default Paddock stand advice

Had a very nice greeting other day in Idle Banter, already much good advice, ta.

Want to get some paddock stands for my fully faired SV (this years model) arriving next week.

Does it matter which one I get, anything to particularly look out for? What's the difference between budget and top of the range???

I'm prob going to get some R&G cotton reels as well-are these used by the paddock stand as well as for crash protection.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

I have R&G cotton reels, they look well used due to the paddock stand marking/scoring the plastic but are still good.

I have a Harris stainless steel rear stand with cotton reel prongs, you want a stand that's stable under the weight of the bike and has a good leverage to lift the bike.

I don't have a front stand so I can't offer any advice on one.

To be honest, ebay and the cheapest. I paid £14 last year for one, solid as a rock, uses cups under the chain adjusters, no scratches or marks, perfik!

Hooks are more stable than the cups. I have a Micron front stand and a cheap no-name rear paddock stand. With cups on, my bike could slide backwards or forwards along the swingarm depending how I pushed/pulled it. With the cotton reels on the swingarm and hooks on the paddock stand, there's none of the movement and the bike is held better. This makes it good and stable, easier to get it on the stands also IMHO.

After some research, i went for Micron front and rear stands (on offer at busters, £45 for the pair)

I use hooks and bobbins, bike does feel more secure and less chance of it slippin off the stand.

Heard that Harris stands are excellant, but theres a premium.

I have an ABBA stand and although it isn't cheap it is well worth the money IMO. Easy for one person to get the bike off the ground and you can work on the suspension using it where you can't with conventional stands. You can buy a riser to get the front wheel of the floor at the same time or borrow a small jack from a car like I did.

See if you can get a stand that does hooks & bobbins, as well as cups then you're covered if someone turns up with a bike that doesn't have bobbins / cotton reels at the back

It is really that good, whether it's for lubing your chain, swapping rear shocks, removing the rear tyre.
They also make a stand for the front now
