After my experience on the Applecross Double Dash rideout I've been busy buying things that I wished I had on that rideout.

I found all of my gear was waterproof bar my boots and summer gloves. So I've brought some waterproof inner gloves and socks.

Me and Pete compared who's was biggest and I found mine was when packed (I mean sleeping bags) :D. So after seeing how small Pete got his sleeping bag with the aid of a compression sack I brought 2 of them. :smt003

Now the most expensive part, a new rear tyre.

Just to pull this back from the brink of derailing if there's any sticky toffee pudding fans going then you've gotta try the one from the drovers. You get the option of adding Cream, ice cream and something else with the toffee sauce and it is delicious. :smt060

I did try other places to beat it but to no avail because they all were tight on the sauce. :D

It's the one with the pull tight straps. If it's as good as the ones Pete was using on the last Scotland trip then it really does a good job of compact stuff. Now I don't need to take a sleeping bag I'll just chuck my clothes or something in them. :)

Skin so soft must be the one in the light green bottle, as its the one with citronella in it. Your in a wigwam, so if you need to take your own sleeping stuff, pillow and sleeping bag is all you need(unless you want to pay for the hire of the sites stuff, usual stuff for a weekend away too, spare gloves, spare tshirt, fleece etc etc cuddlly toy:)

My list compromises of this (some may not apply to you ;) ) :

TomTom
Mobile
Headset for TomTom
DVR
Spare bike alarm fob
Spare bike Key
Normal Camera
Extra batteries
Money
Trainers
Towels
Clothes
Shower gel
Deodorant
Bed gear
Tooth brush
Tooth paste
Scottoil
Something to clean helmet cam
Watch
Phone Charger.
Normal Oil
Waterproof Gear
SD Cards

You may also want a sleeping bag if you haven't opted for the bedding they do down there.
You could take a pillow or manufacture one out of clothes/bags/whatever.

Then think about your bike. Have you got all your breakdown info handy? What about ICE (In Case of Emergency) details in case someone needs to contact someone on your behalf? Maybe think about stashing a puncture repair kit under your seat?

If you haven't got a sat-nav then it might be handy to get a fold out map or something?

You might want to get some sandwich bags for things like wallet/purse to go in to keep it dry in-case the heavens open. Also don't forget to pack everything in plastic bags.

It's up to you how much or little you bring but just some ideas for ya. :)

Edit: Some of these ideas may have been 'borrowed' from the trips I've done with Pete and Lissa where I normally go "Oh I wish I thought of doing that".

Seriously, double bag everything you want to keep dry, complete change of clothes, gloves, underwear. get some plastic gloves, (either the ones from a garageforecourt or marigolds. 6 hours on the bike in the rain and you'll appreciate them, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Gracie,
You can get alcohol on the camp site (I think), pop over to the green welly, or I'm sure KG will have a bottle of whiskey somewhere (easy Ralph ;))
A Spada rain suit is about £35 on ebay.
Earplugs (http://www.safetysupplies.co.uk/trolleyed/4/index.htm): MaxLite Ear Plug(200pr) - £15.30 for a few years supply, or just "borrow" a pair from someone.
Same goes for skin so soft, you might even get a free rub with it ;)

chain lube (it's a lorra miles and I don't have a scotty)
oil
water
ccc explorer spray
spork
clothes on my back plus couple of sets of undys
deodrant, toothbrush etc
spare gloves

then waterever bike clothing I need as per weather.

;)

I'd say there's around a 100% chance of rain at some point, but up here the threat of rain is there even when it's baking hot outside with no clouds in the sky!

My advice would be to bring the waterproofs for this one, regardless of the weather forecast!

I'll waterproof it up then. I'd heard that before.... but it was a questionable source (graciepants). I hate rain...lucky I've got some brand new storms on, they're the best thing I've bought all year :smt026

Anyone got any jump leads they could bring? :-dd

JamesMio
16-06-09, 08:14 AM
Avon Storms are the business - they're going straight onto whatever bike I get next, fo sho!

There really is no guessing what the weather's going to do up here - I went out for a run up to Edinburgh on Sunday, baking hot sun in the morning, thunderstorms and the experience of riding into the jet from a fire hose on the afternoon.

If you've got waterproofs, definitely bring them, if not - definitely buy some!!

There was a 1-piece in Ride magazine this month that was something like £26 and it got 5/5 for waterproof. I'm going to buy one, so I'll try & find the name of it and post it on here.

I still can't get over how good they feel, hopefully it's not just ebcause they're new. Would they work aswell on a different bike?

Nice one, good idea - save me wearing over trousers over my crappy waterproof trousers. I really don't know what kit to wear, if it's boiling my leathers are really the only things that are bearable but if it's going to be wet then my textile jacket's okay but my textile trousers are non waterproof and don't have a removable thermal lining:oops:.

I don't have a list, but it will go something like

Normal bike stuff.
Oil just in case. (probably for someone else's bike, I have a honda)
Waterproof oversuit.
pants & socks
2xT-shirt (going for a week)
jeans
trainers
fleece
Wash kit
Spare gloves (plus plastic gloves nicked off a garage)

Camping stuff.
Chain lube taken care of by scotty plus lubetube.

My only worry is how my tyres will hold up...... I reckon I have enough tread, but only just! Front has 2-3mm rear is 2.5mm to 4mm. might be calling on FAB on the way home!

Is that all the way across? I heard scottish roads are actually good so might get away with it but it's up to how you feel as tyres are so important.

My List.

Engine oil, chain lube, possibly some spare petrol.

That about cuts it for clothes.

Basically my festival list reworked :)
All this will fit in my camelpack, tail pack, panniers and renntec rack :)

Just a quick tip - this stuff works almost as well as the Avon stuff...

Useful - anyone ever used ccc explorer spray? A climber recommended it to me.

I have 2.5mm in the centre and 4mm at the edges of the rear. The front will last I'm sure. I'll be doing over 1300 miles on this trip and that is the rub.

Scottish folks, is there anywhere to get tyres in the Inverness area?

Just smear a good dollop of silicon grease around the spark plug cap on the front cylinder - sorted my curvy out a treat.

Dont worry about the midgies folks. it goes like this.

They are born, they feed, they mate, they lay eggs they die.

The feeding bit is on us, however they land they suck a little blood, the whisky in the bloodstream causes almost instant liver failure due to their size, their mates see this and quickly pass the word to avoid the ginger haired one and feast on the southern invaders.

Little known fact is that it was actually the midgie horde that turned the tide at bannockburn, not Mr Wallaces tactics.

The campsite probably sell the net hat things, but if you wear one you can go and stand in the corner with the germans, in fact you'd be better putting an old pair of tights over your head.

As with all repellants, ASSS only works when they land on you, it does not stop them landing only helps limit the amount of biting.

In all seriousness they are a nusiance, nothing more, worst case scenario you go home looking like youv'e got measles, they dont carry any human infections.

It's a good tip james - it's already my standard practise (How I've gone so long without replacing my stolen fender extender)

Elgin is you're best bet for dealers and garages.
Can't think of any off the top of my head.

Theres at least 2 places in Elgin, not sure if thats too far away for you.
PM The Juj, he knows some of them personally.

Plastic / rubber gloves worn inside your wet weather gloves. They don't really keep you hands any drier as they sweat. What they do is stop the lining of your gloves sticking to your wet hands, so your gloves do not turn inside out when you take them off. Makes putting wet gloves back on a whole lot easier to, as the plastic will slide over the wet lining. Gloves off a garage forecourt are well slippy and free :D
