View Full Version : Christopher Down - Peaks Weekend
Folks,
some of you will know that Christopher came off his bike quite badly on Saturday during the Peaks Camping Ride out.
His folks have asked that I post here and let you all know how he is doing. I will update with his progress as information comes through to me.
He crashed the bike into a stone dyke wall at approx 50-60mph while he then slide across the road and verge and hit the metal post holding up the chevron sign. We since learned that this post had only recently been concreted into place, which has probably not helped his injuries.
He is suffering from:
Bruising to the brain
Broken collar bone (right)
Dislocated shoulder (right - now relocated)
Broken arm (left)
Fractured pelvis (left side)
Damage to his left Fibia.
He was initially attended to by Marie and Mike, first responders in the area, and then Paramedics Phil and Ashley arrived to transport him to a suitable place for Helimed to air lift him from the scene. West Midlands Air Ambulance - Crew were Ian and Stuart.
From all of us who were at the scene these guys could not have done enough. They were fantastic and we'd like to thank each and every one of them personally. I'm naming them here, because they had asked me to keep them updated, and they had said they'd log onto the forum to see how Chris was doing.
I'd personally like to thank DaveNumbers, and Orose for flagging down traffic at the scene and making it safe. OldGit (Keith) Steve and DavieSV and SV4ME for their help at the scene, both keeping myself and Chris calm.
Chris is likely to be in North Staffs University Hospital on Ward 24 for anything up to 2 weeks. He is currently quite heavily sedated and still quite confused. I dare say in a few days he and his parents Steve and Yvonne will appreciate any visitors.
Hopefully tomorrow they will operate to re-set the broken arm, it was scheduled for today, but he was too confused for them to carry it out.
He will require extensive physio for the hip fracture. He is expected to make a full recovery.
And we can now confirm that Christopher does indeed know how to swear.
Jen
Edit: Chris doesn't have his phone etc so any texts that are sent will go un-replied for sometime.

We were all soaked within seconds.

No Maria, sadly the only yellow curvy brave enough to get to the peaks ride out was sat at the campsite with a screw through the rear tyre - but thats a whole other story!

He got to ride in a helicopter and chicks dig scars (of which he will have plenty :))
Can honestly say its one of the most sickening sights i've had the misfortune to witness (although I didn't see the accident) its one thing to hear stories and see it on the tv. But to have a good mate of yours down and obviously in a bad way, and feel completely helpless. Made me sick to my stomach :(
As soon as the ambulance arrived though my mood lifted, knew he was in good hands. Can't thank those guys enough for all their help.
GWS buddy, heres to a full and speedy recovery. And quit it with the potty mouth will you :smt045

He probably wont have any actually, most of the skin was remarkably intact and any repairs will be keyhole. Chris - try harder. ;)

It most certainly does.
I've had to sneak more McDs and KFC buckets to mates after crashes than I care to mention.
Watching them walk for the first time in a hospital ward, brings tears of joy, after seeing them with wires hanging out everywhere, slipping in and out of consciousness
Them coming home, or visiting you as soon as they escape...............A huge feeling of relief and happiness.
I'm afraid I can't go that far to visit a mate in hospital, but if theres anyone on the org that can pop in, even if its for five minutes, it really truely will not only brighten the young fellas daym but will honestly aid his recovery:grouphug:

WTF happened?
It was out near LongMoor (I think) near Leek. Left hand bend on the crest of a hill. No-one really knows or really saw, Steve and DaveNumbers were behind but didnt really see anything. Think it's been a case of going into the corner a bit too hot, grabbing some front brake (unlike chris but who knows) and the bike disappearing from under him. Bike carried on and hit the wall, Chris slid into the metal pole at a fair whack because he took it out and the chevron sign it was holding.
Jen, which part of North Staffs he in as there are 3 sites, he is up the road from me..... is he well enough for a visit?
I'd say prob Wed or Thurs for visits, he's still quite confused and heavily sedated and isn't doing much other than sleeping at the moment. He was taken to the main A&E and was transferred to Ward 24.
Dave20046
12-09-11, 07:35 AM
It was outside tophouse farm, barrowmoor near longnor ,sk17 0qt. firmly stuck in my head. I just saw brake lights going round the bend so knew something was up, slowed and got round to find things settling.Chris was unconcious or stunned so rang ambulance .
Has Chris' bike been sorted? I know it sounds trivial but I think I'd want to know it was taken care of.

You did the completely right thing love and thank you for your quick thinking.
DavieSV and Steve (tarmactester36) were picking it up on a trailer today and taking it to Steve's workshop where it will be stored - very kindly - until Chris is well enough to decide what to do with it.

I would think that would be ok Electro, as I've mentioned visits will likely have to be brief as he's sleeping lots and still quite confused.
I should have mentioned also that the hospital is in Stoke - but I dare say most of you have worked that out!

Folks, I've spoken to Chris's dad tonight. He's had his op to have the metal plate put in his arm and seems to be doing well.
I have to say that his parents are keen for visitors to wait for their say so before visiting. They are expecting him to be well enough for visitors by the end of the week.
Chris is currently not very coherent, is not aware of where he is and is not making much sense at all, at times he doesn't recognise his parents. It is obviously a very distressing time for them.
Obviously things may change very quickly and if they do I will keep you updated, but we should keep in mind that even though we recognise and know Chris, he may not recognise us, or want us to be there if he does.
At the moment we have no idea if he remembers the accident, his bike, the forum or any of us and we need to be wary of setting back any progress he's making.
The Neuro surgeons were into re-assess Chris last night and this morning, and they are sure that the damage is temporary and consistent with the injury he has sustained, but progress and return to "normal" may take some time.
Please do not think I'm trying to tall anyone what to do, I'm just passing on information as best I can. I'm sure we all want what is best for Chris.

TBH, Fenjer, its all very normal stuff. I've seen it countless times. Its very common in these circumstances to completely lose a months memory, not know who people are, and never regain a recount of the events of the accident. Knocks on the head do that to folk. Its a safety mechanism to allow his mind to recover, as its a horrific shock to the system.
I should imagine its pretty shocking stuff for you to be hearing right now from Christophers parents and the hospital, even from your professional POV as a midwife.
Hes also under sedation with a lot of powerful painkillers stomping through him, Morphine does some extremely mind altering stuff whilst under its spell. Hes been in hospital for two days, it'll take another five before they see him to a satisfactory level, dependant on how he wants to fight his battle.
His parents will be pretty protective of their son right now, and will likely to prefer their own time with him, rather than than his biking friends, which is extremely understandable. Can feel pretty stressful seeing folk who ride lots of bikes come visiting, and with their off the wall sense of humour when it comes to ramming into a road sign.
Petes currently recounting the steps he'll go through to get where he needs to be, so am I TBH(Old hands etc). Pete just hopes he doesn't have to sit in hospital with ugly nurses for nine months, like he did, hes too young for such torture! ;).

Thanks for the update Jen, we're all thinking of him and keeping everything crossed for a swift and full recovery. Im sure when he reads this thread he'll be touched by how many people have responded.
I think you're right in trying to delay visiting, with the medication he must be on and the state hes in it may take days, if not weeks, for everything to settle and for him to realise and come to terms with whats happened, motorbikes may be the last thing he wants to hear about!! Its his family he needs with him at the moment and i'm sure everyones happy to wait until they and Chris feel hes ready for visitors.

Jen I don't know Chris, never met him. Can assure you though that he has a good friend in you. Your doing a great service to Chris and his many friends. What Diz says about morphine is very true over the last winter I had lots of morphine and it makes you a different person in many ways. For those who visit Chris even when the brain bruising subsides the morphine may get in the way of communication and recognition as well as making him mong out.
I don't know you Chris, never met you but my thoughts are with you.
