just a quick shout in a quiet corner of the org... thanks to the lads who are organising this - know simon reasonably well and met adam spank at AR12 - top guys who are doing a great job so far :) can't wait
Cheers, it's all coming along nicely!
In all fairness paul me and si are probably doing the least at the moment, daddyjobs been ceaselessly pouring over maps for god knows how long tweaking route after route to try to get the best roads in and thunderace has also done a lot of stuff that will no doubt turn out to be extremely useful for something or other.
Indeed we have, everything going well.
Cheers Paul, we are certainly trying to provide a good weekend for all!:)
+1, we're aiming for great but we'll take good!

Just shy of 8 weeks to go now!!!! I'm aiming to post a couple of photos a week to 'reveal' snippets of the AR up until the event, and hopefully nudge a few more into attendance!
This weeks photos are a sneaky look at the route;

Worse still a smurf movie. This weekend I'm working til late on Friday, Saturday in Whitby with me dad, Sunday working at the YO1 festival (rudimental & aluna George get in!) and then Monday is the only day for a long while where I can do chores and chill before a big stretch of hectic work.... I'll give you a shout a about free weekends coming up before AR see if you fancy it :)

Did some roads today that I expect are on the route. Though perhaps not the one as we left Winchester that was about 6ft wide and mostly gravel, mud and potholes. Great on a GS and KTM, would be horrible on anything without semi knobblies on like an SV.

I think it was Winchester towards Romsey on to Lyndhurst. Might have been a road off a dual carriageway towards Ridge.

I suspect the only bit of the AR route you traversed was the walking from the West Meon pub back to your car. At the crossroads you would've headed north west to Winchester, which although is a great road, it aint the AR route. We chose not to include it because of the lack of jumps.

Not the best road at this time of year (or rather the time of year our weather should have been happening in) but not too bad in the summer.
The AR
Will be more, roughly, in the region of the South Downs.

Sounds perfect - get some more of those and you'll have a route worth riding.
:thumright:
PS. GS? KTM? WTF are you on about? Everyone knows they're rubbish. The ideal bike on roads like that is a 1998 ZX6-R.
Agreed, you don't need those for off roading. A road bike does it just as well, i've done partial off roading on the SV and a few fords. It is the kind of stuff that makes a rideout much more interesting!

Oh well, get organising.
In all seriousness though this was billed as a back to basics AR, none of the people who have organised clothing in previous years wanted to touch it with a barge pole and none of us in the GM wanted clothes ourselves (all our meetings are neked you see) nor did we fancy the hassle of sorting them for others at whatever extortionate price we could get them for. If someone else wants to step up to the plate however I can almost guarantee none of us would be offended.

It's a fair question and we did look into it for a bit but the consensus among us was we weren't really interested ourselves and yours is the first question I've seen on the subject so we'd come to the conclusion it wasn't vital. Not sure how many people wanted them last year, didn't see that many.

the clothing from my side: despite the t-shirts being around £14 (some think this seems relatively pricey for a simple t-shirt) the amount of time going back and forth finalising the design, the amount of time production takes and usually during a busy period of my main line of work etc. it's just not viable. I've never really tried to do the AR clothing as a massive money making scheme 'cos it's for the 'Org - but at the same time the bills do still need paying and events work really has to take priority.
That and standing at a heatpress for 8 hours over 2-3 days is one of the most soul destroying experiences lol. As far as I know cbay is still about and doing his stuff.

the clothing from my side: despite the t-shirts being around £14 (some think this seems relatively pricey for a simple t-shirt)...
Thanks Paul, I hoped you'd chip in but didn't want to name you.
Personally I don't think £14 is expensive for a T-shirt if it's decent quality but it is quite a bit to shell out for something you probably wouldn't wear that much after an event (or at least I wouldn't). In my mind Primark and the like have made such things look less and less worthwhile even if the primark stuff is cheap rubbish that doesn't last.
I'll say again that we're arranging this as a fun event at a low cost but if others (like Cbay) would like to arrange something as a little add on none of us would have an issue(I haven't asked the guys this but I can't see why any would).
Paul the 6th
02-05-13, 11:53 AM
yeah that's exactly it Spank - the shirts are usually gildan or fruit of the loom, which everyone knows are mass produced blank shirts designed specifically for customising a lot of the time - cost comes in the time taken to create the artwork, CAD cut it into flex, weed out the waste material from the flex and then press the flex onto the garment - each garment has a unique username front and back usually, so it's not as simple as just pulling a shirt out of a box and pressing it over 20 seconds, you have to check the against the size, colour, username and any other special requests for that particular garment - then repeat for the next 50-70 garments.
Then packing each shirt, labelling everything up, delivering, paypal take their fee for handling the payment, the website order pages take time to set up so that people can order etc. it's a massive operation which takes many hours - and then there's not a particularly appropriate margin to account for all the hours making everything come together............
and then someone pm's you the day before AR saying they forgot to order theirs and "is there any chance?" lol.
Yeah if cBay or any other orgers want to organise their own stuff then it's up to the AR:GM crew to give it the thumbs up or whatever :)
Excited for the AR though guys! Can't wait.

has anyone asked about showers yet btw? :)
not yet.
If you mean rain showers, there won't be any...
If you mean shower facilities, there wont be any...
Not at the pub anyway, you could have a basic wash in the toilet facilities in the pub as long as you don't stroll down there in only a towel but that's about it.
Can I just take the time to say, I really like the back to basics approach.
So far the majority of the arguments seem to have been about who's picking up the bar tab, degrees of nakedness, and whether the route contains enough gravel to keep everyone happy.
In short the things that matter.
I think through the best of intentions the last few years people have felt pressured into organising more and more add-on facilities. It's nice to just know I can put my name down, rock up at the correct field with a tent and say hello and not worry that I'll not have noticed all the effort everyone's gone to.
Thank you for your efforts so far, me and Mrs Jambo are looking forward to it :)
I'm pretty sure I have a couple of T-shirts with my name on in case I get lost...

I know, why don't we all bring our t-shirts from previous ARs and swap between ourselves thus totally confusing everyone on who is who. That way I might also end up wearing one that isn't ridiculously tight across the bosom as PT6's idea of skinny fit and mine seem to differ.
Am i reading this right, nearly 2 pages of useful information?!?!?! Thanks for the support and good words. We hope it exceeds expectations!

02-05-13, 07:18 PM
Regarding the t-shirts, don't forget that photoshop imbeciles of the GM have been responsible for the logo designs and pressing them onto even a £50 designer t-shirt would instantly render them worthless. Walking around wearing them after the event would absolutely guarantee remarks of utter distain from small children who, upon comparing the design to their play school finger paintings, would find them embarrassingly inadequate at best, and probably an affront to their fragile minds.
Basically I wouldn't buy an AR t-shirt normally, and I definitely wouldn't buy one designed by our artistically impaired cretins.

And for anyone who make take the above seriously, Job was just having an off day and taking us down wrong turns. All horse and gravel shananigans will not feature on the official route! :)

He's read a few pages and still wants to join in? Now that's the attitude we like. Think he could rustle up a few t-shirts?
Only if the t shirts are a size too small and are used in the jelly wrestling pool
