Default KPH speedo on 2001 model not working

Dear All

I went to look at a decent SV650S today with a view to buying as a commuter. The speedo was in KPH and was not working, however the display was on. Is this likely to be the drive or the speedo?

Also, both calipers were binding where it's been stood so likely to need a strip and clean. Is there a 'how to' guide anywhere?

Thanks

Gary

Its likely to be an import so worth checking to see if it has a Euro headlight.Does it have an MOT or any old ones as it could technically fail on dipped beam.If it needs work it should be seriously cheap BTW.

I'd assumed it was an import. It's a 2001 with 17000 kilometres, previous MOTs and road taxed so should be ok.

Needs the speedo sorting and the usual rot on the front forks.

Otherwise reasonably tidy.

Owner wants £1300 but could probably get it for £1100-1200

What do you think?

Speedo is probably just the rotor which sits on the front wheel spindle and is easily damaged when putting wheel back on.Last time I bought one it was about £15.Brakes may just need the pistons cleaning up,but may well need full caliper rebuilds so budget for that.Fork bottoms always rot on SVs.Look carefully at consumables.Tyres Chain/Sprockets,brake pads and service items like oil/filters and plugs. These can add up to nearly half the value of an old bike,so if they need doing in the near future price it accordingly.I would'nt pay more than £800 for it by the sound of what you say.
