Default Is it worth paying to have someone fit new chain and sprockets?

I need to renew the chain and sprockets on my bike.

My question is, Is it worth paying someone to do it? - Be about 40-60 quid to have fitted or is it something I can do myself?

Thanks folks.

I did it myself, wasn't a problem. You will need the correct tools though - torque wrench, sockets and chain breaker. You should at least have the torque wrench and one of the sockets (22mm, I think - or perhaps it's 22mm on the front sprocket, can't remember) for adjusting the chain anyway.

It been so long since I paid someone to do a set for me but 40 - 60 sounds a lot for fitting?

As for doing it yourself, its not to bad, providing of course you have the correct tools...

I know I've definitely got the socket for the rear axel and I course a torque wrench. Not sure about the front sprocket. Will have to check later. A chain breaker I don't have is there a recommended one to buy? If they are expensive I may just pay to have it done as its not exactly something I'll do that often.

Thanks for your inputs so far.

Sound about right for 1 hour labour as otherwise you will need chain riveter, new washer and air/electric impact driver to remove front sprocket nut plus torque wrenches to re-assemble.
The chain breaker will be part of the riveter set but you will need a grinding wheel to take off the old heads before using it.

So yes it sounds reasonable for zero hassle unless you have/borrow all the tools needed.

You need a chain riveter, paddock stand and front sprocket socket (32mm). I used a 3/4 drive and long bar to remove mine, but impact would be another good idea.. Maybe you could borrow from a local orger?

I cheat and whip the angle grinder out to slice the old chain. Riveter was bought from ebay at about £30, did the job. All the kit will take a couple of changes to pay for itself.

Do it yourself. Check the rear disc before starting just in case.

Good luck with the front sprocket nut. I had 3 gorillas hanging off a 30ft breaker bar and it still didnt shift, took it to a garage in the end and they undid it with a rattle gun in about 10s.

Sounds like doing it the hard/expensive way!!

I just went through the old chain with an angle grinder. If you haven't got one of those, then a pair of bolt croppers or a metal saw with the chain on a block of wood will do.

As for loosening the front sprocket - just use a bog ordinary wrench and slip a 1.5m length of steel box section from B&Q over the end to give you leverage. Then just use your torque wrench to do it back up again! (140Nm I believe). No need for a pneumatic wotsit. BUT - DON'T use the torque wrench to undo the nut. Not good for the torque wrench.

Make sure you have a spare lock washer in case the old one gets knackered.

Simples.
