Default SK3 Engine repair, any advice please?

I've been having a little look around the forum for a while now since buying my first SV, it's a '99S in blue, I'ts a great bike and I'm really enjoying it while the weathers nice!
But already I've been distracted by something else.......
I've been looking at picking up a non-running pointy and wondered how much it would cost me to have the engine repaired, apparently the crankshaft has sheared at the point where it joins the flywheel. I'm not that experinced with bike mechanics so I'm just asking around to see if this is a relatively minor repair or is it a new engine job?

Thanks for any advice,

Dave

It is a full strip and rebuild to do that. Its around £120 in gaskets plus the cost of a replacement crank, (budget £60 for secondhand, £1000 new) plus someone to check the end float. If the alternator has snapped off you also have a risk of bearing damage that would also need to be replaced. Then there is labor. If you are doing it yourself then its not to bad, if you are paying someone to do it, its going to get expensive.

A replacement engine is £300 and up wards. And again if your not doing it yourself thats a few hours labor to add.

The real question would be how cheap is this pointy compared to how much a running one is?

Thanks for the info mate, I reckon I could get it for anwhere between £800 and £1000.
Other than the engine work needed it's in immaculate nick.

Not worth it unless you have another engine known to be good and very cheap

Thanks Biggles, I think I'll ditch the idea, thought it might make a good winter project but may work out more economical to just buy a running pointy.

Unless your getting it for sub 500 its not worth it.
Also the engine will be totally goosed at the bottom end. DarrenSV650S's went bang in the same way and it took the whole bottom with it
