Default Hanging on for Grim Death

Or not... a biker has been found alive in South Yorkshire after crashing 3 days ago!

Good luck to him for a full recovery.

My thoughts on this other than wishing the rider a speedy recovery is, should I be filing a flight plan with someone if I go out on my own? It reminds me of Aron Ralston who regretted not filing his...

Google Latitude.

Lucky sod. How strange a thought that you could crash and no one find you for 3 days, usually when I crash people are pointing and laughing within seconds.

Bloke is Lucky but hope he recovers well

The problem I can instantly see with relying on latitude (if your talking about the mobile version) is....how long does your smart phone last before the battery dies? I know mine does within about 8 hours. I always tell my girlfriend roughly what area I am going in just in case I do have an accident

There was a similar case a here a while back, biker was in a field, hidden from the road. No one had witnessed the crash.

From what I remember he was badly sun burnt & dehydrated because he was stuck.

Most of the time Latitude will have a "last updated" location for people, it can be hours out of date and still fine, but yes, I know what you're saying, it does scrub people after a while of not getting an update. Perhaps the police could ask google for the last location though?

Very lucky guy!

As for the idea of Latitude, another option is to install an application such as Where's My Droid (that's for Android, I'm sure similar exists for fruit lovers).

With that people (either everyone or selected) can send your phone a text message, and in response get the GPS coordinates of the device back. It only responds to an incoming message that matches your "attention word" and will automagically switch on the GPS if it is off. Set it to something random and give it to your partner/whoever etc.

Obviously giving it to your partner then means they could text you at any time and find out you're having an affair or in the pub when you said you were working late... so it's not for everyone!

They actually found him at the weekend. This is one of my favourite roads, the spot they found the poor bugger is literally 5 minutes from my door.

See that's the difference between bikes and horses. When a colleague was out on her horse and a car hit them she was knocked into a ditch and broke ribs, arm and collarbone, lung collapsed and a few other injuries. The horse headed back to the yard despite being injured too and then led the staff from the stables back to where he'd left her. If he'd just bolted she may have been there for days. Shame the driver never thought to stop though!
