Hi all. My mate has a naked sv650 k5 and thinks he may have a bent frame can a few of you please measure both sides of your bike from center of swing arm bolt to center of front wheel spindle. I cant measure mine at moment as ive had an opperation and cant bend down to measure. All help welcome and thanks everyone

I don't have a K5 to measure but what makes him think its bent? And does he have a different measurement for each side? And if so how is he sure the forks are straight/ aligned?

He has had sv's for years and had an accident last year he has rebuilt bike and rode it and it just dont feel right he has since changed forks and still got same problem it dont matter what year your sv is as long as its a pointy just need measurments for him

Could be as simple as twisted yokes, check that first, i'd say.
the SV frame is pretty sturdy as i can testify. |

+1 for checking yokes. I bent the ones on my rgv and was impossible to tell until I swapped them.

Even with the forks changed there might be something other than the frame that is the issue such as the yokes as suggested above. There are a lot of things that could be wrong, what exactly has been replaced? What has been checked? What damage was caused in the accident? And doesn't feel right in what way?
And if I had a Pointy I would be happy to take the measurements, but my SV is a '99. |

I'm not sure that it would be possible to take that measurement in a meaningful way - the steering moves. Even if it were it would be of extremely limited use - if any at all. If the frame were twisted it would be quite possible to put the steering in a position such that consistent measurements could be taken and would thus be useless.
If there is a concern over the frame's alignment, and unless the misalignment is large enough to be seen by eye, then measurements of any use can only be gained by someone suitably equipped with the necessary jigs.

without teaching you to suck eggs this method could work if you wind the rear axle right forward and get the front yokes straight to tell you the line of the stem. did it to a crashed moped a while ago which proved some bent forks. |

he t-boned a car that decided to do a uturn in traffic, he rebuilt bike and tried origional front forks but on acceleration the bike wobbled so he has now replaced the front forks with gsxr ones from a no damage gsxr and is still having the same problem he just asked me if i would measure from the centre of my swing arm bolt to the centre of my front wheel spindle, I can only measure one side of my bike at the moment as bike is parked up against my wall and I am unable to move my bike after an opperation. I measured 91 cm on one side and just need to know if thats the normal measurement so i can tell him. thanks for all this help guys your al doing a great job

I think Sid Squid has a good point there...
However you do realise that a measurement of a SV with a GSXR front end against a stock set of forks will be different? Yoke offset, fork length, spindle size, and so on are all different so if meaningful measurements could be taken they would not match a standard bike. So if there is "wobble" under acceleration it could be a number of things. Are the forks set up correctly, how old is the oil in them, were new head bearings used, has the swingarm and shock bearings been checked, is the chain too tight, and so on? |
