Just a quick note - its called Surströmming (sour Baltic herring) and is a vile fermented fish.
The smell is way worse than the taste, and it tastes like a piece of garbage marinated in a homeless guy's underwear. I've opened a can once (outside) and because of the pressure I got some juice on me. Had to throw away the T-shirt as the smell just didn't go away (could have been psychological though).
