hi guys
new guy on here Marc from Belfast i ride a svs650 k9 yoshi pipe and a few other shinny bits anyway like a proper #### i starved my pride and joy of oil. i know! i know! i put brand new bridge-stone t30s on her last month and new chain and sprocket set on Thursday, got laid of on Friday and big end went on the Saturday.. talk about luck anyway i have a very goodfriend who has offered to rebuild my engine for me in as quick time as possible.. we all think its the big end that has gone..which these types of forums seem to confirm.. i dont want to buy a 2ndhand engine. (there was barely 13k on mine) so a rebuild it is. and i planned to build hopefully a better engine the reason why am posting is what all do i need to buy. etc a full gasket set ?new crank? bearings ? and idea of prices or even where to buy or should we wait till we strip it down in to see what all is wrong with it? i also see post about putting a big bore busa piston in the sv.. how easy/hard is this and would it compromise the engine..? meaning make it more prone to problems thanks for reading and please try hold yourself from the oil starvation lectures my dad is treating me like ave murdered a child |

Its all about the state of the crank innit ... and the only way to check is to strip away!

Ah yes forgot about the checking first bit of the question. While it looks most likely that the big end is the problem based on what's been posted and experience there is still a little check you can do...
Drop the oil out from the drain bolt and look for flakes of metal or metal in the oil. Then take the oil gallery bolt out and do the same. From my experience there will be more metal in the oil gallery and not the main drain bolt, but if you do it the other way you might miss the metal as the oil drains out. |

read your thread there SH great looong read sorry about the outcome
my bike is currently in a friends garage with the engine being dropped tonight as your saying about the metal in the oil i was there when they drained it yesterday. in fact the bukket of oil is still out my back. they showed me the sump bolt and there where definate metal flakes on it.. and joiking that the oil had a nice flake effect so this means ? lol |

Don't be sorry about the outcome of SH2, its still in service and now the TZR is built I really should do something about it.
But back to yours; yep it sounds like that is the big ends gone. However like I say check the oil gallery to be more sure. The type of metal should be copper in appearance and small flakes. If your seeing that, strip the heads and barrels off and look for free play in the rods. That will be your final confirmation and will rule out other damage as you go if you are to rebuild. The easiest option is to just replace the engine. But if you want to rebuild it then a gasket set, plus a couple of other orings for the crank half oil pump seal is what you will need. Then its a crank. New is very expensive, secondhand do come up now and again. I wouldn't recommend regrinding, as you have seen. The crank main bearings might need to be replaced but this is a job for a specialist. Other than that its see what else bearing wise is needed as you go. For the Busa pistons its a pair of pistons and a set of rings then a rebore. Depending on what you can find the big bits for the price of a rebuild is roughly the same as a replacement engine if not cheaper. And its a hell of a lot more work to do the rebuild. I know what I would choose. |

I bought a new engine after doing the same thing. It's in the frame, now all I need to do is remember which wires and pipes go where.

Not sure what your dealer network is like over there, but for me I just use my local dealer. Other than that Robinsons Foundry gets recommended a fair bit and they deliver as far as I know.
So you rebuilding it then? |
