Hi guys. Not posted on here for a while but i have been around reading
![]() Iv sold the SV now (will be missed!) and bought a 2002 vfr 800 vtec. Its a lovely bike (took some finding!) and im pleased with it. However, when i set off riding back the indicators did work, but at some point on the journey they decided to stop. I noticed this because the lights on the dash werent flashing either. The indicators are fine, because its got an immobiliser and that flashes them all, no problem. So, ideas? Faulty relay? (Is there only one for all 4 indicators though?) faulty switch? Or the dreaded bad earth? I would post on a vfr forum, but i havent even joined one yet haha. Cheers guys |

if it works with the alarm/immobiliser but not with the switch, i'd say check the switch gear

Cheers! I was thinkin that, but are they difficult to take apart? Lots of fiddley bits?
My mates an electrician, hes had a listen to the switch and says he thinks he can hear it making contact. Must be a connection onto the switch? |

Long shot, but it quick, cheap and easy.
I've had this twice with SVs. On both occasions it was solved by spraying a dab of lube in the switch. It seemed there was something not moving in there. |

two screws hold switch gear in place, easy to take apart. Spray contact cleaner in there when it's open. Checked all fuses etc?

Find the flasher unit, remove its connections and bridge them, operate the switch. The indicators should work - but not flash, obviously. If yes, then the flasher is faulty. If no then check for a live feed at one of the connections. If there is one, leave the bridge in place then check for a live at the switch common.
As the system doesn't work at all, then clearly the fault is in an area that is common to all parts if the system. The common parts are; supply fuse, wire from fuse to flasher unit, wire from flasher unit to switch. If the fault were after the switch it would affect only one side.

They flash when i set the immobiliser off though. Does this use the flasher units? I assume it will use a separate fuse to the indicators to do so though? |

No, just one flasher, the circuit is;
Supply Flasher Switch Lamps Flasher units are often referred to as relays even though they clearly are not relays. This is likely due to their similar manner of packaging and appearance. The alarm output is connected directly to the indicators and does not use any part of the bike's functional system to operate them when the alarm flashes them.
